New braces wearers should stick to soft foods like yogurt, pasta, or pancakes for the first little while. Once the braces start to feel more comfortable, it's safe to branch out. Sugar-free gum and candy with xylitol can help prevent cavities. Unlike sugary gum — which breaks down and creates an acidic, cavity-causing pH in the mouth — xylitol maintains a consistent PH and chewing it helps promote saliva production. Chew a small amount at a time, multiple times throughout your day (up to 10 grams per 24-hour period).
Warning: Xylitol is safe for humans but even small quantities can be deadly for dogs. So keep all products containing xylitol away from your pooch.

Many parents want to know if their children will need braces.

We can detect many bite alignment issues while children still have their baby teeth. In some cases, early orthodontic treatment can correct these issues and reduce or eliminate the need for braces later on. In other cases, treatment needs to wait until the child’s permanent teeth grow in, which may require braces.
