Flossing is so important for removing plaque and bacteria that your toothbrush can’t reach, but are those plastic floss picks really as good as a standard piece of dental floss?

Let’s look at it this way ...

The proper length for a piece of dental floss is from your hand up to your shoulder, and this is so you’re able to use a fresh section as you work your way around your mouth. A floss pick only provides one small length of floss, which means you’re not able to use a clean section as it begins to shred or pick up particles.

Traditional dental floss wins this round, but we still believe there is a time and a place for floss picks. They’re convenient for keeping in a purse or desk at work, and they’re often easier to maneuver — which means they could be the difference between someone flossing or not flossing, and we certainly want to see everyone flossing!

Ever wondered the difference between a dental bridge and an implant? Dental bridges replace a missing tooth by attaching the bridge to the surrounding teeth using crowns or wings. They are a lower-cost solution and a good option if the patient has experienced bone loss where the tooth is missing. However, bridges cannot prevent further bone loss. They can cause strain on the neighbouring teeth and may need to be replaced periodically.

A dental implant is a titanium screw placed in the bone with an abutment and crown attached. The implant integrates with the bone for a stronger, more natural functionality and can prevent bone loss. Because it stands alone, it doesn't cause strain on the neighbouring teeth. A dental implant is also a longer-term solution for missing teeth with many implants lasting a lifetime. However, implants cost more than bridges and sometimes are not covered by insurance.

Deciding between the two options can be tricky, so we offer to review all information with patients and look at any insurance policies to help them make an informed decision. Book a consultation today!

When a tooth is missing, the bone surrounding the tooth can be lost. Bone loss can change the appearance of the face to give the mouth a “sunken” look.

Dental implants are a popular replacement for missing teeth, but they also have another benefit: they can prevent bone loss. The implant stimulates the surrounding bone, keeping it strong and healthy. For best results, the implant should be placed as soon as possible after losing a tooth. Call us to learn more.

Do you see frayed bristles on your toothbrush? That means it’s time to pick up a new one! If it’s been less than three months since your last new toothbrush, frayed bristles may also indicate that you’re brushing too hard! Brushing with too hard a brush, or brushing too much force can cause tooth wear, gum recession, and sensitive teeth due to exposed roots. Be sure to choose a soft-bristled toothbrush and focus on using gentle circular movements to help protect your tooth enamel and gums when you’re brushing.

We perform oral cancer screenings during routine dental exams. This includes visually inspecting the mouth, lips, tongue and throat, listening to the quality of the patient’s voice, checking for signs of swelling or lumps, and screening for risk factors such as smoking, drinking alcohol or sun exposure. If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know at your next appointment.
