🦷 How Often Should You Visit the Dentist?
Most people know they should see their dentist regularly—but what does ā€œregularlyā€ really mean?

We just published a helpful guide that breaks down exactly how often you should book dental check-ups, who needs more frequent visits, and why consistent care is the key to preventing bigger (and more expensive!) problems later on.

Our recent blog post on your child's first dental visit!

Ideally, regular visits should start as early as your child’s first birthday and no later than 3 years of age. You can find out if the cleaning you do at home is working. The dentist can diagnose problems early and treat when the damage is less, and restorations are smaller. But, more importantly, any fears or hesitations that can be resolved in early life will help hinder establishment of dental phobia which will interfere with proper care in adulthood.

The dentist will assess the growth of your child’s teeth and jaws, monitor the eruption and shedding of teeth. When necessary, radiographs will be taken to see how the teeth and facial bones are developing and to find any hidden decay.

Your dentist may also advise you on ways to prevent malocclusion and provide you and your child with information on proper dental home care.

Beyond infancy there are special things you can do that will help make the first dental visit enjoyable - see blog for these ideas!

Wondering how to help your baby and child have healthy teeth?

Avoid letting your infant nurse continuously from a bottle of milk, formula, or juice at naps or at night.

Letting sugary liquid pool around the child's teeth during sleep means acids can attack the teeth and cause baby bottle decay.

Your infant's first set of teeth are important, so protect them!

Your child’s first set of teeth are important because of function (to learn to chew, speak etc.), form (to maintain space for adult teeth) and health.

One serious form of decay among young children is baby bottle decay.

Decay usually begins along the gum-line of a front tooth and then continue to spread to all of them.

There are easy ways to prevent baby bottle decay:

Clean your child’s teeth daily.

If a bottle is absolutely needed at sleep time, fill it only with plain water.

Develop habit of giving plain water for thirst instead of sweet drinks.

If you see brown spots on your child’s teeth, visit the dentist. Early treatment can prevent the permanent teeth from being affected.

Your child’s dental health can be affected by how and what they eat!

We are excited to be having so many generations of patients return for their oral care at our clinic in Burnaby! Many of our patients are now expectant parents or parents of young ones.

With this in mind we have decided, over the next several months, to write a series of blogs on children’s dentistry. We hope that these may serve as a point of reference for most and be a great start for many healthy smiles.

Here's our first post:

Some people find a trip to the dentist nerve racking. If you don’t like needles or metal instruments in your mouth, this isn’t surprising. However, for most patients, dental cleaning is simple and painless. Knowing what to expect during the cleaning visit can help ease any nerves.

Here’s what happens at a dental cleaning at our office in Burnaby:

Physical exam
Dental cleanings are generally performed by a dental hygienist. In some cases the dentist is the one who performs the cleaning. Prior to the cleaning, the hygienist will do a physical exam of your mouth. This is performed with a mirrored instrument and is to access overall gum health, looking for signs of gingivitis or other concerns

Teeth Cleaning
Using the same small mirror and other specialized manual equipment, the hygienist will spend time removing plaque and tartar around the gum line and in between teeth. During this phase it is normal to hear and feel scraping on the teeth. The longer between visits, the longer this phase might take. If the build up is quite significant, then other power instruments may be used.

How your diet affects your teeth

What you eat and drink can have a huge effect on your overall health, and especially your oral health. Thus, you should incorporate a variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, calcium-rich foods, and lean protein into your meals. Ensure you also get enough vitamin C and minerals from your diet to keep your gums healthy and prevent inflammation.

A diet high in acidic or sugary foods or drinks can break down tooth enamel which causes tooth erosion.

Tooth erosion is permanent and you may start to notice it by feeling pain or sensitivity when consuming hot, cold or sweet drinks. Tooth erosion also shows up as yellowing teeth or cavities.

Unfortunately, once erosion has begun, you may need fillings, crowns, a root canal or even tooth removal. Veneers may also be an option to restore your smile.

If you enjoy drinking tea and coffee, fruit juices, red wine, soda, and other similar beverages, make it a habit to rinse your teeth after every cup. These drinks contain high acid and sugar content, so they can erode your teeth’s enamel and invite stains quickly. We also recommend drinking as much water as possible throughout the day to flush your teeth and mouth.

As you age you may also notice your teeth looking more yellowish as the enamel wears off naturally. Thus, rinsing your teeth can help you avoid staining your teeth further and prevent possible damage

If you are suffering from tooth or mouth pain or you are unhappy with the colour of your teeth, contact our Burnaby office today to book an appointment.
