What are we really looking for when we take dental X-rays? 👀🦷

Dr. Lorynn isn’t just checking for cavities. X-rays can show us things we may not be able to see just by looking in your mouth.

Here are a few of the things we’re looking for:

1️⃣ Cavities hiding between teeth
Some decay can develop in areas that are difficult to see during a regular exam.

2️⃣ Bone levels around your teeth
X-rays help us evaluate the bone supporting your teeth and look for signs of bone loss associated with gum disease.

3️⃣ Problems around the roots
We’re looking at the roots and surrounding bone for changes that could indicate inflammation, infection or another concern.

4️⃣ Impacted or developing teeth
X-rays can help us see teeth that haven’t erupted normally, including impacted teeth.

5️⃣ Changes we want to monitor over time
Comparing current X-rays with previous ones can help us spot changes and keep an eye on areas before they become bigger problems.

6️⃣ Anything that simply doesn’t look quite right
Your dental team reviews the entire image — not just the tooth that might be bothering you — for other abnormalities that may need a closer look.

And this is exactly why we like reviewing your X-rays with you.

We don’t want you staring at a black-and-white image wondering what we see. 😅 We’ll point things out, explain what we’re watching and walk you through why we may or may not recommend treatment.

Your X-rays are only one part of the picture, but they can give us information we simply can’t get from a visual exam alone.

Visiting Banff? Add bear spray to your packing list. 🐻🏔️

Banff National Park is bear country, and carrying bear spray is one of the simplest ways to be better prepared before heading out on the trails.

A few things to remember:

🐻 Carry bear spray somewhere easily accessible — not buried at the bottom of your backpack
🥾 Stay alert and make noise while hiking
👥 Travel with others and keep your group together
🎧 Avoid earbuds so you can stay aware of your surroundings
↔️ Always give wildlife plenty of space

Not sure what bear spray to buy?

Look for a full-size bear deterrent that is registered for use in Canada — not dog or coyote spray. Brands like Counter Assault, Frontiersman, SABRE Wild Max and UDAP are common options.

We also recommend choosing one that:
• Comes with a belt or hip holster
• Has lots of time left before its expiry date
• Is clearly labelled as a bear deterrent
• Is easy to access quickly if you ever need it

Most importantly, know how to use it before you head out.

We’re lucky to live and work in one of the most beautiful places in the world, and a little preparation goes a long way when exploring it safely. 🤍
