Tooth decay/dental caries

According to WHO, tooth decay is the most common noncommunicable disease worldwide.

Symptoms
In early tooth decay, there are usually no symptoms. As tooth decay advances, it may cause
• Toothache(tooth pain)
• Tooth sensitivity
• Pain when eating or drinking something sweet, hot or cold
• If the tooth becomes infected one may experience facial swelling, and fever, and in rare cases can lead to more serious or even life-threatening infections

Risk factors
Everyone who has teeth is at risk of getting cavities, but the following factors can increase risk:
• Foods that cling to your teeth for a long time — such as ice cream, sugar, soda, dried fruit, cookies, candy
• Bedtime infant bottle feeding
• Inadequate brushing
• Not getting enough fluoride

Prevention
Good oral hygiene can help you avoid cavities and tooth decay. Here are some tips to help prevent cavities
• Brush with fluoride toothpaste and floss daily
• Visit your dentist regularly (You may not be aware that a cavity is forming. That's why it's important to have regular dental checkups every 6 months and cleanings, even when your mouth feels fine).
• Avoid frequent snacking
• Eat tooth-healthy foods

Treatment
Cavities are commonly treated by filling them and in some cases root canal therapy may be necessary.

Note to parents: Young children are at risk for “early childhood caries”/ baby bottle tooth decay, which is severe tooth decay in baby teeth. Have your child’s teeth checked by the dentist every 6 months. Children also need healthy teeth to help them chew and speak clearly, while also helping to hold space for adult teeth.

Tooth Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity is a common dental problem. It involves experiencing pain or discomfort to your teeth from eating sweet things, cold air, hot/cold drinks or ice cream. Some people with sensitive teeth may experience discomfort from brushing and flossing.

Sensitive teeth are typically the result of worn tooth enamel or exposed tooth roots. Sometimes, however, tooth sensitivity is caused by other factors, such as a cavity, a cracked or chipped tooth, a worn filling, or gum disease.

If you're bothered by sensitive teeth, visit the dentist. The dentist can identify or rule out any underlying causes of your tooth pain and help to ease the pain. Depending on the circumstances and the cause of your pain/discomfort, the following might be recommended: use of desensitizing toothpaste, fluoride application, filling, gum graft, root canal treatment and use of mouth guard if you grind.

Ignoring your teeth can make things worse. Remember to always brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and floss daily to help keep your smile bright and pain-free. And see your dentist for a checkup every 6 months.
