Gum recession is where the margin of the gum surrounding the tooth wears away exposing more of the tooth, tooth’s root.
A lot of patients are bothered by the appearance of this, or it can lead to tooth sensitivity or could act as a food trap.
The common cases of recession are:
1. Gum disease: plaque and bacteria can build up around the tooth that destroy gum tissue and bone. Usually gums are swollen, tender and bleed easily
2.Brushing too hard: brushing teeth too aggressively can lead to enamel thinning or gum receding over time.
3.Hormonal changes: during pregnancy, puberty, menopause gums can become sensitive and vulnerable to recession.
4. Smoking: smokers have an increased risk of diseases therefore leading to recession.
5.Grinding/ Clenching theeth: this can exert too much force on the teeth causing gums to recede.
6. Poor diet or Nutricional Deficiencies: for example vitamin C makes up the bulk of collagen which makes up gum tissue. If there is a vitamin c deficiency this could affect the strength of gum tissue.
