🔘 “Mulberry Molar: Clinical Features, Causes, and Diagnostic Considerations”
Mulberry molar is a classic dental manifestation associated primarily with congenital syphilis, characterized by multiple rounded enamel nodules replacing the normal occlusal anatomy. For professionals in the Medent community, understanding its presentation is essential for accurate diagnosis, early detection of systemic disease, and appropriate interdisciplinary management.
☑️ Clinically, mulberry molars exhibit irregular, globular cusps, hypoplastic enamel, and a distorted occlusal surface, giving the crown a mulberry-like appearance. The defect results from disrupted amelogenesis during tooth development caused by Treponema pallidum infection in utero. First permanent molars are classically affected, and the condition is often found alongside Hutchinson incisors, forming the well-known dental triad of congenital syphilis.
☑️ Diagnosis requires a careful medical and prenatal history, clinical examination, and consideration of associated systemic findings. Although treatment focuses on restorative rehabilitation, clinicians should also collaborate with physicians to ensure comprehensive evaluation and management of the underlying systemic condition.
👉 Mulberry molars remain a critical reminder of the link between oral findings and systemic health, reinforcing the importance of an integrated medical-dental approach in modern practice.
