🦷 A baby's first cavity-causing bacteria may come from someone who loves them most.

Babies are not typically born with the bacteria responsible for most tooth decay. As their first teeth erupt, saliva-sharing habits—such as kissing on the lips, sharing spoons, or cleaning a pacifier with the mouth—can transfer cavity-causing bacteria into the child's mouth.

One of the primary bacteria involved is Streptococcus mutans. Once it reaches newly erupted teeth, it can attach to the enamel, feed on sugars from food and drinks, and produce acids that gradually weaken the tooth surface. Over time, this process can increase the risk of Early Childhood Caries (ECC), one of the most common chronic diseases affecting children worldwide.

The message isn't to stop showing affection. Kissing on the forehead or cheek, cuddling, hugging, and other loving interactions remain important parts of bonding. The goal is simply to understand how oral bacteria spread, reduce unnecessary saliva sharing during infancy, and maintain good oral health among parents and caregivers.

A healthy smile often begins long before the first cavity appears.
