A sneeze is one of the fastest and strongest actions your body can do.
When you sneeze, your body quickly pushes air out through your nose and mouth. This air can move as fast as 100 miles per hour (160 km/h). Some studies say it may be closer to 50 mph—but that’s still very fast.

During a sneeze, your body releases more than 20,000 tiny droplets into the air. These droplets can travel as far as 20 feet (about 6 meters). Many of these droplets can carry germs, like viruses and bacteria. This is why sneezing can easily spread illness to others.

Your body sneezes to quickly remove things like dust, pollen, or germs that are irritating your nose or airways. That’s why it’s very important to cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze—to protect others from getting sick.
