Cavities don’t happen overnight — they’re a process.
1. Bacteria build up
Plaque forms on your teeth and contains bacteria that feed on sugars and carbohydrates.
2. Acid attacks the enamel
The bacteria produce acids that gradually weaken and demineralise your tooth enamel.
3. A small cavity begins
If the enamel continues to break down, a small hole or cavity can form.
4. Decay gets deeper
Without treatment, the decay can progress into the dentine and eventually reach the nerve, causing sensitivity, pain or infection.
The good news?
Cavities are largely preventable. Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth, limit frequent sugary snacks and drinks, and keep up with regular dental check-ups.
The earlier you catch a cavity, the simpler the treatment can be. Book for a check-up now!
