Do wisdom teeth always need to be removed? Not always.

Some can stay healthy, while others may trap plaque, irritate the gum or affect the tooth in front. A wisdom teeth check up can assess position, surrounding gum and whether monitoring or treatment may be appropriate.

What happens when tooth decay reaches the nerve?

A cavity can start in the enamel, move through dentine and eventually reach the pulp, where the nerves and blood vessels are located.

When the pulp becomes involved, symptoms may include pain, sensitivity or infection. The earlier a dental problem is assessed, the more treatment options may be available.

Dr Raymond Platon & Associates provides dental care for patients in Wetherill Park and surrounding suburbs.

Do wisdom teeth always need to be removed? No.

Some wisdom teeth can remain in place when they are healthy, positioned appropriately and can be kept clean. Others may need treatment if they are impacted, difficult to clean, repeatedly inflamed, affected by decay or causing problems for nearby teeth.

A wisdom teeth check up can help assess the position of the teeth, the surrounding gums and neighbouring teeth. Dental X rays may also be recommended when clinically appropriate.

In our latest article, we explain:

• when wisdom teeth may be monitored
• when removal may be considered
• what impacted wisdom teeth means
• whether a wisdom tooth can cause problems without pain
• what happens during a wisdom teeth assessment

If you are unsure whether your wisdom teeth need attention, the first step is an assessment rather than assuming they need to be removed.

What can a cosmetic dentist in Wetherill Park actually help with?

Cosmetic dentistry is not one single treatment, and the right option is not the same for everyone.

Some patients are mainly concerned about tooth colour. Others ask about chipped teeth, gaps, uneven tooth shape, worn teeth or teeth that have shifted over time.

Depending on the individual situation, treatment options may include professional teeth whitening, composite bonding, veneers, crowns or orthodontic treatment.

At Dr Raymond Platon & Associates in Wetherill Park, the first step is to understand what you would like to change and assess your teeth, gums, bite and existing dental work before discussing treatment options.

Sometimes the treatment a patient first asks about is appropriate. Sometimes a more conservative option may be worth considering instead.

We have published a new guide explaining what a cosmetic dentist can help with, how different treatments are considered, and why an individual assessment matters before making a decision.

Individual assessment is required before treatment recommendations can be made. Suitability, risks, limitations and outcomes vary between patients.

Acid erosion happens when repeated exposure to acidic drinks gradually softens and wears away tooth enamel.

Soft drinks, energy drinks and sports drinks can contribute to enamel erosion over time. As enamel becomes thinner, teeth may look more translucent at the edges and become more sensitive to hot, cold or sweet foods and drinks.

It is not just the sugar. The acidity of a drink also matters.

If you notice tooth sensitivity, thinning or worn edges, or changes in the appearance of your teeth, a dental examination can help identify the cause.

It is one of the first questions many people ask when considering orthodontic treatment.

For many patients, braces may be worn for around 12 to 24 months, although there is no single treatment time that applies to everyone.

Your treatment timeline can depend on several factors, including the starting position of your teeth, your bite, how much tooth movement is required and how your teeth respond during treatment.

Another important point: your teeth can start looking straighter before treatment is actually finished. Bite correction, rotations, spacing and finishing movements may still be required.

We have put together a detailed new guide covering:

• what affects braces treatment time
• when you may start noticing changes
• adult orthodontic treatment
• regular braces adjustments
• factors that may delay treatment
• what happens after braces are removed
• why retainers matter

What actually happens when gum disease progresses?

Gum disease can begin with inflammation around the gums. As it progresses, deeper periodontal pockets may develop and the tissues supporting the teeth can become affected.

This short animation explains how gum disease can progress and why professional periodontal assessment and treatment may be recommended.

If you are experiencing bleeding gums, swelling, gum recession or other changes around your teeth, a dental assessment can help determine what is happening and what care may be appropriate.

Brushing straight after a soft drink? Wait. The acid may have temporarily softened your tooth enamel.

After an acidic drink, rinse your mouth with water and wait at least 30 minutes before brushing gently with fluoride toothpaste. Brushing too soon may contribute to enamel wear.

It is a small habit, but an important one to remember. Save this video for later or share it with someone who brushes immediately after drinking soft drink.

Can teeth move after braces, even years later?

Yes. Teeth can gradually shift after orthodontic treatment because the mouth continues to change throughout life. Inconsistent retainer wear, a damaged or poorly fitting retainer, gum health changes and natural ageing may all affect tooth alignment.

A tight retainer or small changes in your bite may be an early sign that movement has occurred. However, you should not force a retainer that feels painful or no longer sits completely over your teeth.

Our new article explains why teeth move after braces, how retainers help maintain alignment and when an orthodontic review may be appropriate.

What looks like a tiny dark mark may extend further beneath the tooth’s surface.

Once decay reaches the softer layer beneath the enamel, it may progress more quickly towards the sensitive centre of the tooth. However, appearance alone cannot reveal its depth.

A dental examination can help assess the area and determine whether treatment is needed.
