That colour change can have several possible causes, and it is not always just surface staining.

Your jawbone actually changes when you wear braces. And most people have no idea this is happening.

So how can a tooth move through bone without simply pushing through it?

The answer is a fascinating biological process called bone remodelling.

When braces apply controlled forces to a tooth, the tissues around its root respond.

On the pressure side, specialised cells called osteoclasts gradually break down bone.

On the opposite side, osteoblasts help form new bone.

This coordinated process allows teeth to move gradually into new positions while the surrounding bone adapts.

The animation shows a simplified version of what happens beneath the gums over time, not in a matter of seconds.

It's one reason orthodontic treatment takes time and requires careful planning and monitoring.

You brush your teeth every day. So why is your tongue still white?

It's something you might notice while brushing your teeth in the morning. You look in the mirror, stick out your tongue and see a white coating.

Is it normal? Is it oral thrush? Should you try scraping it off?

The answer depends on what's causing it.

A white tongue can develop when bacteria, dead cells and debris collect on the tongue's surface. Dry mouth can make it more noticeable, too.

But here's something worth knowing.

A white coating and a persistent white patch aren't necessarily the same thing.

A common coating may improve with gentle tongue cleaning and better hydration.

Oral thrush can cause creamy white patches, sometimes with soreness or burning.

And a white patch that doesn't rub away, particularly if it persists, may need a professional examination.

The important thing? You can't reliably diagnose the cause just by looking in the mirror.

And please don't try to scrub a stubborn white patch away. Aggressive scraping can irritate your tongue.

Yes. Tooth decay can sometimes develop without obvious pain, especially in its earlier stages.

That is one reason regular dental examinations matter. A tooth may look and feel normal while changes are developing underneath the surface.

Things worth getting checked include:

Your tooth can look fine while gum disease is progressing underneath the gumline.

Plaque and calculus can build up below the gums, causing inflammation and deeper periodontal pockets. As periodontal disease progresses, the bone that supports the tooth can gradually be lost.

Possible signs of gum disease can include bleeding gums, swollen or tender gums, persistent bad breath, gum recession or changes around the teeth.

Gum disease does not always cause obvious pain in its earlier stages. A dental examination can help determine what is happening and whether treatment is needed.
