Are your front teeth chipping? I see many people who believe this has happened to them because, "they bite their fingernails", "eat crusty bread", etc etc. It is likely that the real reason behind this may be clenching/grinding teeth at night whilst you sleep.
How can we help protect your teeth?
One can see how worn this patient's lower front teeth are and how the chip on the top front tooth is caused by the point on the lower tooth. This is part of a process called bite collapse.

What usually happens on a kid's first trip to the dentist?

Alright, so your kids are getting ready for their very first trip to the dentist?
First impressions are lasting ones, so let us make this one count. At West Coast Dental Care, we make a child’s first dental experience a fun one.

In this article, we are going to discuss what to expect on your child’s first dental trip.

When should a child see a dentist?

As a general rule of thumb, it is recommended that you bring your child for their first dental visit when they are around 2.5-3 years old. This can be sooner if you notice anything of concern. While your child’s baby teeth will fall out and make way for adult teeth, the baby teeth set the tone for the future health of your child’s smile.

Let’s get the kiddies be comfortable

The first step is to ensure your child is comfortable.
This starts with how the parents introduce the concept of seeing the dentist – Never say, “don’t worry, it will be OK”. The interesting thing is that the kid wasn’t worried, until you said, “don’t worry”.
As far as the kid is concerned, all that we are going to be doing, is counting their teeth to see how many they have.
If your child is already anxious from a previous bad experience, then our inviting entrance and sitting room will help ease your child into the visit. We want to ensure their anxiety is eliminated and that they are willing to cooperate with the process. We have various toys to keep their minds occupied. When your child comes into the dental surgery, we help them into their dental chair. They can then, perhaps, “drive the chair” by pressing the special buttons that allow your kid to go up and down. We let them have a bit of a play, before we get them to lay back.
All of this stuff is directed by the incredibly experienced, brilliant and friendly dentists here at West Coast Dental Care. This is when your Perth children’s dentist will get a better view of your child’s teeth. Using a special bright light, the dentist can see all their teeth. But don’t worry, they give your child a set of cool sunglasses to wear.

The finishing touches

Each child is different with differing needs and a different psychology. We always tailor the approach to each child.
At the end of the day, by bringing your child to West Coast Dental Care, we will help secure your child’s dental health for the future.

And…away you go!

We are done! Your dentist will have discussed and shown you the best ways to accomplish a good daily clean of your child’s teeth.
All the best, we will see you in six months! Mum and dad, please don’t be afraid to ask questions or share your concerns. While checking your child’s mouth and assessing their oral health is imperative, it’s equally vital to have you all comfortable with the experience. We invite you to ask us whatever questions you like during this time.

If your child is in need of seeing the dentist for the first time, or they are due for a routine dental check-up, our team is here to go above and beyond to ensure your child’s dental experience is comfortable and enjoyable. If you’re ready to schedule an appointment or are eager to find out more, please get in touch with our clinic today.

It is always a compliment and a pleasure treating a colleague - that is a dentist who out of all the dentists available, chooses me to perform his dental treatment. In this case, there were a number of older metal fillings that were replaced to composite "white" fillings. You will note that the teeth, at the finished result, definitely don't appear to have any fillings - only a sealant which one might see on a young healthy tooth after the fissures have been sealed.

Confidence is an amazing thing.
Confidence in your appearance and smile allows and nurtures a more confident personality. A confident person is likely to be more successful in anything they do.
It is a privilege having success stories shared with me, by my patients - success that they feel was brought upon by their new smiles.

You only get one chance to make a good first impression and your smile is your greatest visual asset.
So, why not maximise this asset to help you in your social life, business life and generally to just feel good about yourself. I found this photo and caption, by somebody else, which pretty much says it all.

I have just come back from Adelaide, after having the honour of being asked to speak at the dental profession's biggest Australian Conference the last few days of last week. What a great event. This event allows the whole of the dental profession to be exposed to the latest thinking, treatment techniques and the various cutting edge equipment that has been released. Well done ADA (Australian Dental Association)

Thought for the day: No matter how skillfully the wrong treatment is accomplished, it is still the wrong treatment.
A comprehensive diagnosis is only arrived at by taking a very detailed and accurate history of all the relevant facts that relate to the problem. Special tests become relevant and, only then, can one embark on exploring the relevant treatment options.
With this in mind, I saw a lady this last week who attended West Coast Dental Care with the request that I perform the crown on her cracked tooth that had been previously prescribed by her previous practitioner. She had been referred, specifically to me, by another patient of mine who was very happy with the treatment that she had received.
After a careful and comprehensive assessment, we noted that:
1) There was evidence that she was a grinder/clencher of her teeth whilst she slept.
2) Her bite (the way her teeth came together between her upper and lower jaws) was aligned such that there was more pressure on that one tooth than the others – especially in side movements.
3) The placement of a crown is an irreversible procedure that is quite destructive on tooth tissue. Before we jumped into this procedure, I suggested that we should try something that involved just some minor adjustment of her bite? She agreed.
So, to summarise, I can report that there has been a complete cessation of her symptoms by this minor adjustment that took all of 3 minutes. i.e. The right treatment has been performed because we came to the right diagnosis.
What a great outcome for a lady that avoided an unnecessary destructive procedure and at a fraction of the cost. She has also been advised to consider an “occlusal splint” that she would wear at night to protect her teeth whilst she grinds.
