A small filling today can mean a lot less to manage later.

Dental decay does not pause between appointments. When it is identified early through a routine clinical examination, the management options tend to be more straightforward than when it is picked up further down the track.

Fillings are used to restore areas of the tooth affected by decay, with the aim of protecting the remaining tooth structure and limiting further progression. Left unaddressed, decay can develop into something that requires more involved treatment.

There are a few things people still believe about digital scanning that are not quite right.

Some assume a scan is not detailed enough for treatment planning. Others think a small mouth or sensitive gag reflex rules it out. And plenty of people worry that getting scanned means they are already committed to treatment. None of that is accurate.

A digital scan builds a precise three dimensional model of the teeth, and it is simply information. What happens next, if anything, is decided through a proper clinical assessment with your dentist.

This is Kerrie, one of our regular patients, coming in for her routine preventative care appointment with our oral health therapist Suzie.

During the visit, Suzie checked Kerrie's soft tissues and carried out an oral cancer screening, an important part of every appointment and particularly relevant for patients who wear dentures. Her lower teeth were also cleaned as part of the routine hygiene visit.

During the clean, Suzie identified cracks and stress lines on a back molar. Kerrie is returning next week to see Dr Michael Ghobrial, who will assess the extent of the crack and discuss whether a restoration or crown may be the most appropriate way to manage the tooth.

This is a good example of why regular preventative appointments matter. Clinical concerns that are not yet causing symptoms can still be identified and addressed early.

This patient presented with concerns involving the gum line, missing teeth, and damaged teeth across the upper arch. Following a thorough clinical assessment, treatment was planned in stages, beginning with a gum lift to address the gum contour, followed by an implant crown and bridge to replace the missing and damaged teeth.

Sequencing treatment in this way allows each stage to be completed with consideration for tissue healing, bite function, and overall oral health before the next phase begins.
