Right now, over 800 people in Toowoomba are experiencing homelessness, and sadly, youth homelessness has grown by over 75% since the last count. These are not strangers; they're our neighbors, many of whom are children. When you're going through tough times, even simple things like a toothbrush can feel out of reach. Dental pain is a common but often overlooked health issue among those experiencing homelessness. It can make eating, sleeping, and speaking difficult, and it can also affect your confidence, especially when you're trying to find a job or face other challenges.
Instead of writing a cheque, we decided to do something more personal. As a dental practice, we have a unique opportunity to make a real difference. We thoughtfully assembled 50 adult and 20 children's oral care packs, each filled with essentials and friendly tips for good oral health. We then had the pleasure of delivering these oral health care packs to the dedicated team at YellowBridge QLD, who tirelessly serve those in need every single day.
There's a saying we really cherish: if you ever feel you're too small to make a difference, just try sleeping next to a mosquito.
While 70 packs can't solve homelessness, having 70 people with one less worry this week is a meaningful start. Every big change begins with small steps. We're grateful to CEO Adrian Bonica, Board Chair Clare Schonfeld, and Board Director Dominic Ryan for welcoming us and sharing the amazing work YellowBridge is doing throughout our community.
