Are you snoring? Wake up feeling unrefreshed? Feel tired during the day? These can all be signs of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), where we can stop breathing or have restricted breathing during sleep. This will potentially lower our oxygen levels which can have a significant detrimental effect on our health.

An oral device called a mandibular advancement splint (MAS) can help control OSA and eliminate snoring. It works by stopping the lower jaw from dropping back when our muscles relax during sleep. This causes the compression of the windpipe resulting in a partial or total blockage. The effort required to overcome this creates the snoring. A high quality MAS is adjustable so that the ideal jaw position can be found that has the most therapeutic effect.
At Toowong Dental Group, Dr John Wilkinson has vast experience in making MAS for snorers and sufferers of OSA. He is currently accredited with Somnomed and Oventus to provide their high-quality devices.

It is recommended to have a sleep study as an MAS will be less effective in moderate-severe and severe OSA. You can be referred to a sleep clinic by your GP. An alternative is to go to some pharmacies that can set you up for a home sleep study. The results will be analysed by a specialist physician and Dr Wilkinson can help you understand the results.
