During Dental Health Week the Australian Dental Association is focusing on the oral health of young Australians aged 18–25 through the ‘My Smile’ campaign.

This stage of life is full of change, with young Aussies moving out, studying or starting a job, learning to budget and taking care of their own health. Something has to give, and it's usually their oral health which means that many young adults put off going to the dentist until something is seriously wrong.

Kids winter sports are here. A good time to remind what to do if an adult tooth is knocked out. Don't touch the root of the tooth and try to place it gently back into the socket (a very quick rinse with water is ok). If this isn't possible, the tooth and root need to be kept moist to give it the best chance of staying vital. Saliva is the best liquid to store the tooth in until you get to the dentist - ideally the patient's saliva (either in their mouth, or in a container), but anyone's saliva is better than water or milk.
