Today we sat down with Roger, a patient of Sydney Implant Institute for 14 years, as he reflected on dentistry in the 1940s.

Roger grew up during the Second World War, when children had very little access to dental care, and he remembers what it was like when dentists were sent into schools afterwards. Dr Mark Braund joined the conversation to talk about how much has changed since.

A look behind the scenes at Sydney Implant Institute. Fourteen years as a patient, and a catch up with Dr Mark Braund. Continuity matters in dental care. When the same team sees you over the years, your history is already known and changes over time can be easier to spot. The check itself is next, so swipe.

Six-monthly hygiene visit with Shaista Said, oral health therapist. All-on-4 teeth need looking after just like natural teeth do. Professional cleans and checks assess the gums around the implants and clean areas that are hard to reach at home, because plaque can build up around implants without any pain. All-on-4 by Nobel Biocare.

Provisional crowns are a trial run. They let the team assess shape, bite and how they sit day to day before the final crowns are made. Adjustments happen at this stage, so the final result can be refined with you.

Daily huddle before the first patient. The team goes through who is coming in and where they are up to in treatment, so everyone is across the plan before you walk through the door.

Three months in a temporary bridge, then the final one. That stage gives time to see how the bite and look work day to day before the final bridge is made. Valentyna, our treatment coordinator, is with patients through each step.

The crown is designed on a digital scan of the mouth. Shape is checked from the cheek side and the tongue side before anything is made.

Then the finishing step. A zirconia implant crown is glazed, which refines the surface and appearance before it comes to the clinic.

Moulds and bite reviewed together by our treatment coordinator and dentist. Teeth meet thousands of times a day, so small differences in the bite can affect how restorations wear and feel. Reviewing it together means everyone is working from the same information.

Two weeks before his hyper-complex full arch implant surgery, John shared what he was most looking forward to.

After wearing dentures for more than 50 years, something as simple as finishing a meal without stopping to rinse his mouth mid-way through had become something to look forward to, not something he took for granted. Dental implants sydney patients often assume cost decides their treatment. It does not.

The real deciding factor is bone volume and how many teeth are missing. A single missing tooth usually needs one implant and a crown, no impact on neighbouring teeth. Full arch loss needs a different structure entirely, which is why All-on-4 uses angled implants at the back of the jaw to anchor into denser bone, avoiding the need for a bone graft in many cases. This is decided at your scan, not guessed at your first visit.
