Thailand healthcare is changing and it’s exciting to watch. 🇹🇭

When people hear medical tourism in Thailand, they often immediately think cosmetic surgery or affordable treatment.

But there’s a much bigger healthcare industry developing behind the scenes.

Just this week, Bangkok hosted major HealthTech, biotechnology and laboratory exhibitions, bringing together more than 300 exhibitors from 15 countries and showcasing over 500 technologies.

Thailand is investing in medical technology, biotechnology, research and healthcare innovation as it strengthens its position as a regional medical and wellness hub.

Having worked in Thailand’s medical tourism industry for 15 years, I’ve watched the conversation change enormously.

It’s no longer simply:
“Why would you go overseas for healthcare?”
Increasingly, it’s:
“What healthcare can I access while I’m there?”

And I think we’re only going to see that shift accelerate. 🇹🇭❤️

It all started with a trip to Thailand in 2009… ❤️🇹🇭

I was 25 years old, travelling to Thailand alone for surgery, very nervous, ridiculously excited, and finally doing something I’d wanted for such a long time (I’m pretty sure at 15 I knew I wanted a b**b job).

…please appreciate the quality of my 2009 phone photos, We’ve come a long way!

I honestly can’t even remember whether I told my parents before I went or casually broke the news when I got home 😂

What I do remember is how much that trip changed the direction of my life.

For the next couple of years, people constantly asked me about my experience.

Where did you go?
Who did you see?
What was Thailand like for surgery?
Would you do it again?
How do I organise it?
Is it safe?

Eventually I thought…maybe there’s something in this.

So in 2011, BKK Cosmetics was born.

Medical tourism and particularly travelling to Thailand for cosmetic surgery was still pretty taboo back then. In fact plastic surgery was still really only big for the rich and famous. There wasn’t Instagram or TikTok showing you every step of someone’s surgery journey.

So I started talking about it…

That led to stories on Today Tonight, Channel Nine, radio and in newspapers… and suddenly this little business I’d started took off.

In 2015, BKK Cosmetics became Surgery For Me. Needed a new name as I kept getting emails from china wanted to discuss importing make up and it became annoying.

Since then there have been babies, family life, COVID and periods where the business understandably had to take a back seat.

But somehow, here we are.

15 years later. ❤️

Still travelling to Thailand.
Still working with incredible people.
Still helping others navigate something that started with me being that nervous 25 yo getting on a plane alone.

And still having so much fun doing it.

It’s pretty special looking back and realising that one decision in 2009 eventually became such a huge part of my life.

So to all of my nervous first timers. I have lived that too ❤️

Yes it is!!!!!!!
I absolutely love this direction from Tourism Thailand!

The Tourism Authority of Thailand is now using “Healing Is the New Luxury” as part of its international wellness strategy & I think it captures where medical and wellness tourism is heading!

Travelling for healthcare is no longer about finding a cheapest procedure.

People are looking for exceptional medical care (which is just incredible in Thailand) preventative health, recovery, wellness and an experience that supports their overall wellbeing.

From advanced hospitals and specialist medical care to wellness, rehabilitation and preventative health, the country continues to evolve from a traditional medical tourism destination into a complete health and wellness destination.

After working within Thailand’s medical tourism industry for many years, this is exactly the evolution I’ve been watching over the years and really wanting to get in to! It’s exciting!!

Thailand’s medical tourism industry is evolving …

And this is something I think more Australians should know about.

This month, Thailand announced a new collaboration bringing together 32 partners across healthcare, medical research, wellness, academia and the private sector to accelerate medical innovation.

The focus includes MedTech, HealthTech, preventative healthcare and wellness innovation, just another step in Thailand’s ambition to become a leading regional medical hub.

We’re also seeing an enormous shift towards preventative health and wellness tourism, with Thailand’s wellness tourism market recently recording 36.4% annual growth.

For years, medical tourism was often talked about simply in terms of travelling overseas to save money.

That conversation is changing.

Patients are increasingly looking for quality, expertise, technology, preventative healthcare and a complete patient experience.

And that’s a side of Thailand’s healthcare industry I’m also passionate about sharing.
