"Myth: if nothing hurts, you don't need a dental visit." This one's incredibly common, and also one of the reasons a lot of dental issues get caught later than they could be.

The thing about a lot of dental problems is that they don't always come with pain, at least not early on. Tooth decay can develop quietly beneath the surface before it reaches a nerve. Gum disease often shows very few noticeable symptoms in its early stages, even as it progresses underneath the gum line. Cracks in teeth can sit there for a while before they cause any discomfort at all.

That's really the point of regular check-ups. They're not just for when something's already wrong, they're a chance to catch things early, before pain even becomes part of the picture. Waiting for pain as the signal to book in can sometimes mean a smaller issue has already had time to grow.

Crowns and bridges get mentioned together a lot, but they're actually used for pretty different things.

A crown covers a single tooth that's been damaged or weakened, restoring its shape, strength, and appearance while leaving the rest of the tooth in place underneath. A bridge, on the other hand, is used when one or more teeth are missing altogether. It replaces the gap by anchoring onto the neighbouring teeth for support, effectively bridging the space where the missing tooth or teeth used to be.

Which one makes sense for you really depends on what's going on in your mouth. If a tooth is still there but needs reinforcing, a crown is usually the way to go. If a tooth (or a few) is missing entirely, a bridge might be worth discussing. Your dentist can talk you through which option fits your specific situation.

Outcomes are not guaranteed. All procedures carry risks, including non-surgical procedures like dental veneers and whitening. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner. This case involved a patient with a protruding right canine, a concern made more noticeable by the indented position of the teeth on either side of it. The combination had led her to angle her smile in certain photos and social situations to draw less attention to that area.

Invisalign was considered but wasn't the preferred option for this patient. Instead, a smile design plan using porcelain veneers and crowns was developed to address the tooth position and overall alignment of her smile. The full treatment, from planning through to placement, was completed within three weeks.

Cases involving a single prominent tooth alongside adjacent teeth in an uneven position often call for a combined approach, rather than addressing just the one tooth in isolation, which is why the treatment plan covered veneers and crowns together.

Thinking about clear aligners but not sure how they actually work? Here's a rundown of the basics.

Clear aligners are a series of custom, removable trays that gradually shift your teeth into position over time. Each tray in the series is slightly different, guiding your teeth step by step toward the planned result. Invisalign is one of the most widely used systems out there, while ClearCorrect is another option that might suit your needs depending on what your dentist recommends after taking a look at your teeth.

Every case is different, which is why it all starts with a free smile assessment, a chance for your dentist to check whether clear aligners could be a suitable option for you before anything else happens. Eligibility is determined by your dentist following that assessment, based on things like tooth position and bite alignment.

This consultation is complimentary and does not include an exam, x-rays, diagnostics, or treatment. Fees apply for further services if booked. Outcomes are not guaranteed. All procedures carry risks, including non-surgical procedures like dental veneers and whitening. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner. See the Resources section of our website for additional treatment information and considerations.

"Myth: veneers damage your natural teeth." It's a concern we hear fairly often, so let's talk through what's actually involved.

Porcelain veneers are thin shells that are bonded to the front surface of a tooth to change its shape, colour, or overall appearance. To help them sit properly and look natural, a small amount of enamel is typically removed from the tooth beforehand. This step is a normal and necessary part of the process, not damage in the sense most people worry about, but it is a permanent change to the tooth, which is why veneers are considered carefully before proceeding.

Because this step can't be undone, suitability really comes down to an individual assessment of your teeth, your bite, and what you're hoping to achieve. Your dentist can walk you through exactly what's involved for your specific situation before any decisions are made.

Outcomes are not guaranteed. All procedures carry risks, including non-surgical procedures like dental veneers and whitening. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
