Carbon dioxide is the critical factor in ensuring that oxygen is released by our red blood cells and helps energise every cell in your body.

Incorrect breathing SIGNIFICANTLY lowers carbon dioxide levels and reduces oxygen supply to your cells. Bigger and deeper breaths actually REDUCE the amount of oxygen that is available – not increase it.

There are a number of advantages of nasal breathing:

- Proper filtration of air

- Optimal oxygen and CO2 balance

- Support for proper jaw development

- Maintains healthy oral pH levels

Dysfunctional breathing can:

- Make the body more acidic and prone to dental problems

- Result in narrower upper and lower jaws, resulting in crowding of teeth

- Affect every one of the body's eleven functional systems

Using your diaphragm to fill your lungs (your stomach should move out when you breathe in and in when you breathe out) is essential for proper breathing.

Transforming your beverage choices requires more than temporary changes - it's about building sustainable habits that support lasting health.

Our practical step approach:

IMMEDIATE CHANGES (This Week): - Replace one sugary drink daily with infused water - Brew large batches of herbal iced tea for easy access - Read labels on all beverages to identify hidden sugars

BUILDING MOMENTUM (This Month): - Experiment with different flavour combinations - Gradually reduce remaining sugary drinks by 50% - Invest in quality glass water bottles and brewing equipment

LONG-TERM LIFESTYLE INTEGRATION: - Make beverage preparation part of weekly meal planning - Develop a rotation of favourite healthy drinks to prevent boredom - Share new habits with family and friends for supportive environments.

At Sydney Holistic Dental Centre, we understand that sustainable change happens gradually. Our role is to support you with education and strategies that work with your lifestyle, not against it.

Remember to moderate frequency and maintain regular pure water consumption alongside these healthy alternatives.

Your daily habits shape your oral health! 🦷

Small, consistent actions make the biggest difference to your smile and overall wellbeing. Here are our top tips for maintaining a healthy mouth:

↪️ Brush twice daily for two minutes using gentle, circular motions

↪️ Don't skip flossing – it reaches the 40% of tooth surfaces your brush can't

↪️ Stay hydrated to support natural saliva production and pH balance

↪️ Choose whole foods that nourish your teeth and gums from the inside out

↪️ Book regular check-ups so we can spot potential issues before they become problems

Remember, your mouth is connected to your entire body. When you care for your oral health, you're supporting your overall wellness too!

Think of your mouth as your body’s first line of defence. The simple acts of brushing and flossing do more than freshen your breath and prevent cavities – they help maintain a balanced community of oral bacteria that supports your overall wellbeing.

TMJ discomfort, teeth grinding, and jaw tension aren't just dental issues – they're often connected to stress, sleep quality, and overall health.

At Sydney Holistic Dental Centre, we look beyond the immediate symptom to understand what's really happening.

Common signs you might notice:

➡️ Clicking or popping when you open your mouth

➡️ Morning headaches or facial tension

➡️ Difficulty chewing or jaw fatigue

➡️ Teeth grinding or clenching

Your jaw health connects to your breathing, posture, stress levels, and sleep patterns.

Understanding these connections is the first step toward lasting relief.

Experiencing jaw discomfort? We can help identify what's contributing to your symptoms and create a personalised treatment plan.

Choosing a holistic dentist? Here are five questions worth asking anyone you are considering.

How do you connect my oral health to the rest of my body?

What materials do you use, and why?

How do you approach prevention, not just treatment?

How much time will my appointment allow?

Will you explain the reasons behind your recommendations?

A practice that welcomes these questions is usually a good sign. We genuinely love being asked them.

Brushing battles at your place? Try turning it into a game.

Pick a two-minute song, use a fun timer, and brush alongside your child so it feels like something you do together rather than something done to them.

Little ones usually need a hand with brushing until around age seven or eight, when their coordination catches up.

Calm, consistent, no nagging required.

During a holistic visit for kids, we also keep an eye on jaw development, airway, and how the teeth are coming through, because these factors shape long-term health.

Dr Yin-Yin Teoh's philosophy is prevention first: helping patients achieve and maintain healthy mouths and comfortable, well-functioning jaws for the long term, rather than only stepping in once there is a problem.

That preventive mindset runs through everything we do here.

If jaw tension or clicking has been bothering you, an early conversation is always worthwhile.

A free, anytime reset for a tense jaw: lips together, teeth apart.

When your face is at rest, your teeth are not actually meant to be touching. Many of us hold them clenched without noticing, especially when concentrating or stressed.

Try it now. Let your jaw soften, lips gently closed, a small gap between your teeth. That is the relaxed resting position.

Pair it with a few slow belly breaths, also called diaphragmatic breathing, and your jaw gets a little break.

Save this and check in with your jaw a few times today.
