Difficulty opening your mouth after an extraction is often called trismus. It can occur when the jaw muscles and surrounding tissues become irritated, inflamed or swollen after treatment — particularly following more complex extractions.

You may notice:

💠 Difficulty opening your mouth fully
💠 Tight or sore jaw muscles
💠 Discomfort when chewing or speaking
💠 Tenderness near the extraction area
💠 Jaw movement feeling restricted

For many people, mild stiffness gradually improves as the area heals. Following your dentist’s aftercare instructions, eating softer foods and avoiding excessive jaw strain can help during recovery.

However, contact your dentist if the stiffness is getting worse rather than better, is accompanied by increasing swelling, fever, severe pain, a bad taste or discharge, or significantly limits your ability to eat and drink.
