Teeth Whitening.
Teeth whitening is a conservative way to give some amazing results! This patient not only suffered from discoloured teeth, but also fluorosis of the enamel and discoloured fillings. So what happened here?
Fluorosis is a condition that can affect the development of enamel. It often leaves the teeth with white spots. Mild fluorosis is usually no big deal, but more advanced fluorosis can leave brown spots which can cause obvious aesthetic concerns. Fluorosis is often caused by extremely high quantities of fluoride being ingested during tooth development - most commonly this is where children are swallowing adult strength toothpaste. If you have children, please ensure your child spits out toothpaste and not does not eat it. Conversely, please don’t avoid fluoride based toothpastes as they do provide increased protection from decay and acid wear - just don’t let your child eat it.
Treatment in this case: professional teeth whitening under dental supervision, tooth lightening (a procedure to reduce fluorosis), and replacement of discoloured fillings.
