So… are tongue ties real?
𝐘𝐞𝐬 — 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞.

But does everyone who has one need a frenectomy?

This week, a beautiful first-time mum reached out to 𝐃𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐲𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐘𝐨𝐮 feeling overwhelmed. She had been told that tongue ties weren’t real and was encouraged to just try her newborn on a bottle instead.

My role in this moment was to listen, support her concerns, and refer her to the wonderful team at The Myofunctional Centre North Melbourne for a full evaluation and tailored recommendations.

👅 𝐒𝐨, 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐞?
A tongue tie (ankyloglossia) is when the thin tissue under the tongue (lingual frenulum) is too tight or short, restricting movement.

But here’s the key:
🔹 𝐈𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐟 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 — like feeding, swallowing, speech, or even breathing and sleep in some cases.
🔹 Not every tie requires treatment — a proper assessment by experienced professionals is essential.
