If floss has an unpleasant smell after cleaning between certain teeth, it’s usually a sign that food debris, plaque, or bacteria have been trapped in that area.

The spaces between teeth can be difficult to clean with brushing alone, which is why flossing helps remove build-up that may otherwise remain unnoticed. When bacteria break down trapped food particles, it can create an odour.

This can sometimes happen more often in areas where:
• food tends to get stuck
• gums are inflamed
• plaque has built up
• or cleaning is more difficult due to tight spacing or dental work

Consistent flossing and good oral hygiene can help reduce this over time. If the smell persists regularly in the same area, it may be worth having it checked professionally.

🦷 Plaque vs Tartar — what’s the difference?

Plaque is a soft, sticky, and usually colourless or pale film that constantly forms on the teeth throughout the day. It is made up of bacteria, food particles, and saliva, and can often go unnoticed unless it builds up.

If plaque is not removed effectively through regular brushing and flossing, it can harden over time due to minerals in saliva. Once hardened, it becomes tartar.

Tartar is typically harder, more firmly attached to the teeth, and can appear yellow, brown, or even darker in colour depending on staining and how long it has been present. It commonly forms near the gumline and between teeth.

Unlike plaque, tartar cannot usually be removed with brushing alone and often requires professional cleaning.

Keeping plaque under control early is important, as both plaque and tartar can contribute to gum inflammation and other oral health concerns over time.

Electric and manual toothbrushes can both clean the teeth effectively when used correctly — but they work a little differently.

Electric toothbrushes use rapid bristle movements or rotating heads to help remove plaque from the tooth surface and along the gumline. Some people find them easier to use because the brush does more of the motion automatically, which can help improve consistency and brushing coverage.

Manual toothbrushes can still provide excellent cleaning when proper technique, brushing time, and gentle pressure are used. Factors such as brushing for long enough, reaching all tooth surfaces, and replacing the toothbrush regularly are often more important than the type of brush itself.

The best toothbrush is usually the one that helps you maintain a thorough and consistent routine comfortably.

🦷 TRUE or FALSE: Bleeding gums when brushing is normal?

Many people assume bleeding gums are caused by brushing too hard, but regular bleeding is often linked to inflammation in the gums. This commonly happens when plaque builds up around the gumline and irritates the surrounding tissue.

When plaque is not removed effectively, the gums can become swollen, tender, and more likely to bleed during brushing or flossing. If left unmanaged over time, this inflammation may progress into more advanced gum problems that can affect the supporting structures around the teeth.

Occasional irritation can happen, but gums that bleed consistently are usually worth paying attention to.

“I only came because food kept getting stuck there.”
“I only came because my partner noticed it.”
“I only came because it suddenly felt different.”

Sometimes people book a dental appointment for reasons that seem small at first — not always because they’re in pain.

Small changes in the mouth can be easy to ignore, especially when they don’t seem urgent. But paying attention to these little signs can help identify concerns earlier and prevent them from becoming more complicated over time.

Even something that feels minor can be worth checking for peace of mind.

Even people with a consistent brushing routine can accidentally miss certain areas of the mouth.

The areas most commonly overlooked are often:
• along the gumline
• behind the very back molars
• and the inner surfaces of the lower front teeth

These spots can be more difficult to reach and are areas where plaque and tartar commonly accumulate over time. The lower front teeth, in particular, are more prone to tartar build-up because they sit close to the salivary glands.

Taking a little extra time to angle the toothbrush properly and clean these areas thoroughly can help improve overall oral hygiene.

Before a patient even sits in the dental chair, several important steps are already being carried out behind the scenes.

Treatment areas are thoroughly disinfected, instruments are sterilised, and materials needed for the appointment are carefully prepared ahead of time. Patient notes and medical history may also be reviewed so the dental team is aware of any relevant concerns before treatment begins.

These preparation steps are an important part of maintaining a safe, organised, and efficient clinical environment for every patient visit.

Sometimes teeth can feel clean right after brushing — but that doesn’t always mean every area has been cleaned thoroughly.

Plaque and build-up can still collect in places that are easy to miss, especially between teeth and along the gumline. A truly effective routine is about consistency, technique, and reaching the areas that need the most attention.

Feeling clean is a good start — but cleaning well makes the real difference over time.

What Makes a Smile Look Healthy?
A healthy-looking smile isn’t just about having very white teeth.

Things like healthy gums, clean tooth surfaces, hydration, and even confidence can all affect how a smile appears. Sometimes, small daily habits make a bigger visual difference than people realise.

A healthy smile often looks natural, comfortable, and well cared for — not just bright.

Behind many healthy smiles is a mum who taught good habits, offered comfort, and always cared.

From reminding us to brush our teeth to encouraging us to smile with confidence, mothers play a big part in the little routines we grow up with. This Mother’s Day, we celebrate all the mums, grandmothers, and mother figures who continue to care for the people around them every day.

Happy Mother’s Day from all of us at HaOey Dental 🌸
