Being told you have "gum disease" can be alarming and create a lot of anxiety. You may be told that gum disease is irreversible, or it's because you've been lazy, or worst of all that you are going to lose all of your teeth.

Fortunately there are Periodontists to help you understand exactly how bad your gum disease is, and the full scope of treatments available to help you maintain your OWN dentition, in good health, over many years. There are literally no tooth replacements available that are better than your own teeth. We can also talk you through everything you can do to help yourself.

No matter how bad your gum disease is, your Periodontist will give you hope. Hope that you will retain your own teeth for your lifetime, and not have to wait for Christmas "for (your) two front teeth, so you can wish us Merry Christmas" 🎢🎢

The real difference between 'a clean' and a periodontal maintenance visit.
It's a common question with not such a simple answer.
Once you have been diagnosed as a periodontal patient, you will always be considered at risk of future gum disease. It is a condition which requires long term management rather than one off treatment to provide a cure. This is why we prefer the term "Supportive PeriodontalTreatment" (SPT).

🦷 Control of plaque above the gum line - Periodontists have tools and tricks for almost every situation to make you a super cleaner!
🦷 Meticulous control of plaque below the gum line - once gum pockets are deeper than 3mm then special tools are required
🦷 Assessment of any LOCAL factors contributing to gum disease - root grooves, fillings below the gum line, dental implants and many more factors can complicate how gum disease behaves. These factors can change between appointments and need to be mananged.
🦷 Assessment of any SYSTEMIC factors contributing to gum disease - your general health is a significant contributor to gum disease activity. Reassessment of changes is essential at every visit and can change how often you need to attend for SPT. Your periodontist may liaise directly with your medical practitioner/s for your best health outcomes.
🦷 Surgical intervention - the need for surgical intervention is a highly personalised decision. Periodontists receive extensive training during their specialist degree in all the types of surgery which can be considered, and most importantly when they are appropriate for you.

We love our general dentists because they are the "general managers" of your oral health and will direct you where you need to go for the best help. Periodontists are highly specialised in all things gums and some people just need a bit more than a regular scale and clean.

Happy International Women's Day 🦷πŸ₯°

The Australian and New Zealand Academy of Periodontists (ANZAP) represents the second largest group of dental specialists in the Australian and New Zealand work force.
🦷 When the Academy was created in 1987, women represented less than 10% of members.
🦷 In 2024 women make up 33% of the membership
🦷 50% of the current Executive are women
🦷 In some of the current post-graduate periodontal programs the courses are 100% women.

In reality, all Periodontists are really lovely people irrespective of race, gender or any other personal feature. It is more important that the Periodontist you choose for you, is the Periodontist that is right for you.

Meanwhile, as we acknowledge women in general today, we also acknowledge the shoulders of the giants, both male and female who have come before us.
