SEVEN - THE MAGIC number...... Most parents wonder when is the best time to take their child for an orthodontic assessment. The magic number is 7.

At age seven, your child's physical growth is steadying. They have a mix of permanent and baby teeth. Both the American and Australian Association for Orthodontists recommend that age seven is a good time to have their first orthodontic assessment.

The orthodontist can make an assessment about your child's teeth, jaw and bite development so that there are no surprises in the future. To book your child's initial appointment, please call our office on 9249 4250 or fill in a Request for Consult form on our website. We woud love to hear from you!

We are seeing more parent-led enquiries, where because of a keen eye, parents are taking the initiative to bring their children in for an orthodontic assessment. This can lead to timely intervention because some orthodontic problems are best solved at a younger age.

Here is a link to our blog, "My Child's Teeth Seem Fine, why should I bring them to see an Orthodontist?" with some useful information on reasons for early assessment.

Despite your child's seemingly fine teeth, an orthodontist can identify underlying problems. This page discusses the necessity of early orthodontic evaluations.

THREE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT ORTHODONTICS - ANSWERED!!

1. Does Orthodontics hurt? The answer is NO! Orthodontics is non-invasive. Your appliances and braces are glued on, and thought they are meant to move your teeth, they do so at a very slow rate. You will, however, feel some discomfort with braces when they are placed but you will get used to it!

2. Are Orthodontists Dentists? They are Specialist Dentists. Orthodontists' initial training is in general dentistry, and they obtain their specialty training which usually last 2-3 years. Think of it as how a heart specialist has to train as a doctor first, then go for more specialised training to become a heart specialist!

3. When should I bring my child for the FIRST ORTHODONTIC CONSULT? Age 7 to 8 years old is the IDEAL time to bring your child for their first orthodontic consult. This is so the Orthodontist can assess whether the development of their teeth and jaw is on track, and if it is not, they can provide a plan to treat it. If your child's development on track, we won't need to see them for a few more years. If they need treatment, some treatment may be time-sensitive, so you want to be able to plan ahead!

As an orthodontic patient, you have two (main) jobs:
1) Brush & floss your teeth
2) Keeping a strict diet of no hard foods and no gummy foods!

Our patients are directed to brush 4 times a day (usually after every meal) and are given a list of things to avoid. This will ensure a smooth and fast orthodontic journey!!
