Today is R U OK? Day.

One of the quiet upsides of orthodontic treatment is how often we see people. Every six to eight weeks, for a year or two. You get to know how someone usually is, which means you notice the weeks they’re not themselves.

You don’t need a reason or the right words. “You’ve been a bit quiet lately - how are you going?” is enough. And this year’s message is a good one: ask any day.

Day five of Dental Health Week, and this one’s for everyone currently in braces.

The usual suspects: apples bitten straight into, crusty bread, ice, nuts, hard lollies. Front brackets cop it first because that’s where you bite.

No judgement, it happens to everyone. But a loose bracket means that tooth stops moving until we get it back on — so a few breakages can stretch your treatment out by months.

Cut it up, chew at the back, and you’ll be out of them sooner.
