A dental check up is actually a lot more than us looking in your mouth and saying “yep, teeth still there” 😂🦷👀✅✨

We’re checking your teeth 🦷 gums 🩷 existing fillings 🔎 bite 😬 and all the soft tissues in your mouth 👄🔦✨

When appropriate, X rays 🩻🦷 help us see the things we can’t see just by looking 👀 including what’s happening between teeth, underneath existing dental work and in all those sneaky little hiding places 🕵️‍♀️🔎🦷

And then comes one of our favourite bits…

Because moving your tongue helps us check underneath it, beside it and around the floor of your mouth for changes that may be easy to miss, including ulcers that do not heal, red or white patches, unusual lumps, swelling, bleeding or changes in movement 🌈🥹🫶🏻

Why this check matters in Australia 🇦🇺 In 2025, an estimated 5,577 Australians were diagnosed with head and neck cancer, including lip cancer. Mouth cancer can affect the lips, tongue, floor of the mouth, cheeks, gums and roof of the mouth 👄 👅

Behind every colourful little dental clinic is someone quietly holding things together 💜🦷✨

Meet Doug Todd

Doug is married to Dr Mary, but he has also been helping Smile City behind the scenes since right back at the beginning 🥹

He has hung pictures, moved furniture, fixed things, carried things, helped with set-up, been dragged into social media content, looked after the girls, and generally pitched in whenever we needed him 😂💪

As we get closer to Smile City’s 4th birthday, we wanted to say thank you to one of our favourite behind-the-scenes humans.

So this week, Doug got a little Smile City glow-up with some teeth whitening 😁✨
