📍Have you heard of periodontitis?
It is the inflammation of periodontium.
📍So what is Periodontium?
Periodontium involves the gums, bone and other
supporting structures of teeth.
📍How does it become inflammed?
It is caused by plaque which is a sticky, colourless film of bacteria that builds up on the teeth, particularly at the necks of teeth where they meet the gums. Plaque accumulation causes inflammation of the gums, which in turn may become red, swollen and prone to bleeding. At this stage it is called gingivitis.
When the plaque is not still being removed, it will harden to
become tartar also known as calculus. The bad bacteria make this as their home. In the more advanced stages, bone and its supporting structures may be damaged and is called periodontitis. If not treated, eventually it lead to tooth loss.
🔑How to avoid the situation?
-Regular professional cleaning with your dentist every 6 months.
-Brush twice a day.
-Use of floss/interdental brushes/waterpiks.
