Chipped Teeth🦷

Chipped teeth happen more frequently than you may think. And when they do, patients often quickly phone their local dentist to make an appointment. As dentists in Newcastle, we have seen our fair share of chipped teeth. Typically, a chipped tooth is relatively simple, painless and affordable to fix….that being said, is fixing a chipped tooth always necessary?

The Pain Factor

Pain can be an important factor in whether a patient decides to fix their chip or not. A chipped tooth shouldn’t necessarily be painful, so if you are in pain there could be an underlying issue that may have occurred during the impact that caused your chipped tooth.

The Aesthetic Factor

We have been brought up in a society where straight, unchipped teeth are admirable. Whether this relates to your own personal values or not is up to you, but generally aesthetics play a role in people fixing their teeth, especially if it’s their front teeth.

The Practical Factor

Our teeth have unique sizes and shapes for particular reasons. Having a chip in one of your teeth, depending on the size of the chip and the placement of your tooth, could result in difficulties in chewing etc.

At the end of the day, it is your personal choice whether you fix a chipped tooth or leave it be. At our dental practice in Newcastle, we usually advise fixing all chipped teeth to maintain your natural dental structure.

Preventing Chips

Chipped teeth often occur out of the blue, but they can be prevented by wearing a mouthguard when playing sports and avoiding biting down on hard foods. If you’re known to clench your jaw and grind your teeth, you may want to look into some solutions for these problems.

Treatments For Chips

Chips are very common and treatment is straightforward. If the chip is small, a simple filling may suffice, but if the chip is large or at an odd angle a crown will need to be added to the tooth, which is slightly more complicated than a filling but not what we would call a major dental procedure.

Tooth Brushes! 🦷

Replacing your toothbrush is not something that many of us think about. We’re people who quickly throw out unwanted goods, make it a priority to stock up on essential household supplies and ensure that our wardrobes are fit for everyday wear, but we often neglect our dental hygiene.

When Is It Time To Replace Your Toothbrush

At Newcastle city dental we recommend replacing toothbrushes every 3 months. This is because, after some time, your toothbrush will experience wear and tear, and the bristles break down, becoming less effective against fighting plaque from teeth and gums.

It is also important to change your toothbrush because germs can hide and build up in the bristles, leading to teeth and gums being infected.

Bacteria and fungus can also develop in toothbrush bristles when not adequately taken care of. After brushing your teeth, it is important to thoroughly rinse off and dry your toothbrush, store in an uncovered, and upright position away from other used brushes.

Advice From Dr Mark Williams

One of the most significant uninvited issues you can face by not replacing your toothbrush is damaging your gums. Old toothbrushes are one of the leading causes of gingivitis because of their ineffectiveness to remove plaque from teeth. When left untreated, gingivitis can cause infections, leading to teeth falling out.

Another unsettling issue regarding using the same toothbrush for too long is that, believe it or not, your toothbrush can grow mould and you can ingest contaminated particles floating in the toilet or bathroom.

What to Consider Before Buying Dental Products

We suggest getting a toothbrush with soft bristles because hard ones can easily damage your teeth and gums. Also, make sure that you get the correct sized head toothbrush that covers at least two teeth when brushing.

Make sure you’re well-informed about dental products that best fit your teeth before making any purchase. Ask your dentist for recommendations too.

Managing Wisdom Teeth

Your Wisdom Teeth are the last set of molar teeth that come through. For most people, they typically come through in your late teens or early twenties. They often cause complications due to misalignment and frequently require removal by a dental professional.

How to know if your wisdom teeth are coming through?

Wisdom Teeth don’t always cause complications; you might not experience any symptoms when they come through. If, however your Wisdom Teeth is impacted or there is a misalignment you might experience the following symptoms:
* Swollen or red gums,
* Sensitive or bleeding gums,
* Jaw pain, swelling around the jaw and difficulty opening your mouth,
* Bad breath or an unpleasant taste in your mouth.
If you experience any of the above symptoms behind your last set of molars, you should consult your dentist immediately.

Managing Wisdom Teeth

If you’re concerned about Wisdom Teeth complications, it is best to talk to your Dentist. Your dentist can discuss the positioning of your wisdom teeth. X-rays can be taken periodically during regular check-ups and cleans to assess the alignment of wisdom teeth. In some situations, it might be recommended to remove your wisdom teeth before problems develop.
This is done to prevent further complications and unnecessary pain that might occur in later years. It is often easier to remove wisdom teeth in younger patients than older ones. This is because the Wisdom Teeth roots are not fully developed. In adults, the recovery and healing time can be longer and often impacts with work commitments.

Why You Should Have Good Oral Health Before Seeking Out Cosmetic Dentistry!

Many people get quite excited about getting their teeth whitened, and other cosmetic dentistry procedures, but the same excitement ceases to exist when it comes to fixing cavities and other procedures necessary for your oral health.

As cosmetic dentists, we have had many patients come in who want cosmetic dentistry work done but whose oral health requires help. We must fix any underlying issues or infections before we begin on any cosmetic procedures.

While it is tempting to spend your money on teeth that look good, what is most important is your oral health.

What Conditions May Cause A Delay To A Cosmetic Dentistry Procedure?

Unfortunately, there are quite a few conditions that could delay you from getting cosmetic dentistry work done. That’s why it’s important to get a consultation before booking a procedure. The good news is that most conditions can be fixed within a few weeks, and then you can get back to your desired cosmetic work.

Conditions that may cause a delay in your cosmetic dentistry procedure of choice include:

Abscess
Gum infections
Severe sensitivity
Rotten teeth

At Newcastle City Dental, we believe in a healthy foundation for all of our cosmetic procedures, to ensure longevity and a healthy smile that lasts!

Filling Those Cavities First

One of the most common delays for a cosmetic procedure is probably cavities. Cavities are very common in general, and most people may not even realize that they have them. Cavities are a form of decay and should be treated effectively before any cosmetic procedures are performed.

Cavities damage the enamel of your teeth and cause a build-up of oral bacteria. It’s best to have this bacteria removed and any holes filled before you embark on any other dental work.

Once your dental health is in order, we can start working on your winning smile!

Why we need regular dental check-ups?

Regular dental check-ups are an important part of maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Without regular check-ups, minor problems can quickly become major ones.

What happen during your dental check-up?
Regular dental check-ups involve a thorough examination of your teeth, gums and oral tissue. The dentist will take an x-ray of your mouth to check for issues that cannot be noticed by the naked eye. During the examination, your results will be compared to your last visit to identify any problematic changes. If any issues are found, the Dentist will discuss a treatment plan with you.

During your check-up the Dentist will investigate the following:

Cavities: dental cavities (also known as tooth decay), are caused by a specific type of bacteria which destroys the tooths enamel. This bacterium builds up on the teeth in a sticky film called plaque.
Gum Disease: gum disease is caused by a build-up of plaque on the teeth around the gum line.
Abnormalities: the dentist will also check for other issues such as signs of oral cancer.
The Scale and Clean Process
Your dental check-up will also involve a scale and clean. Professional cleaning can prevent cavities, tarter build-up and gum disease and is an important part of oral hygiene. The Dentist will remove plaque and tarter from your teeth that could otherwise lead to cavities and gum disease. Even with daily cleaning, tarter builds up on teeth and needs to be removed using special equipment.

After your teeth have been cleaned, fluoride treatment is used to help strengthen your teeth against decay and repair the enamel on your teeth.

Does a check-up and clean hurt?
A Dental check-up and clean should not cause any pain to the patient. Due to advances in modern technology the check-up and clean process is relatively comfortable. Patients should not fear regular visits to the Dentist.

How often should you have your teeth checked?
It is recommended to have a dental check up every 6 months. This will ensure any minor issue is found before it turns into a major issue.

Tongue Ties and Dental Health: How It Affects Oral Health and What To Do About It?

The Effects of Tongue Ties On Infants, Children, and Adults
A tongue tie is a condition where the tongue is attached to the bottom of the mouth via abnormally thick, short, or tight tissue. This can restrict tongue movement and affect speech, feeding, and oral hygiene.

Tongue ties are usually present at birth and can be genetic. Some infants with tongue ties may have difficulty breastfeeding, as the tongue may not move properly to create a proper seal around the ni**le. This can lead to poor milk transfer, affecting infant growth and development.

In older children and adults, tongue ties can lead to speech difficulties, including difficulty with certain sounds or words, and issues with oral hygiene due to restricted tongue movement.

Sometimes, tongue ties may need to be treated with a simple surgical procedure called a frenectomy, in which the frenulum is cut to release the tongue. This can improve tongue movement and improve speech, feeding, and oral hygiene. A pediatric dentist or oral surgeon can evaluate and recommend appropriate treatment for tongue ties.
