Mouth breathing reduces the oxygen supply that your body receives.

Breathing through the mouth can dry out the oral cavity causing dry mouth, lips and throat. Plaque eventually starts forming and hardens on the tooth surface, causing stains that are harder to remove.

Mouth breathing may also cause crooked teeth, facial deformities, or non-optimal growth in children.

It is linked to daytime sleepiness and poor performance at work or in school.

In adults, chronic mouth breathing can cause bad breath and gum disease.

It can also worsen symptoms of other illnesses such as the increased risk of rhinitis or sinusitis.

The mucous in the nose helps to filter, warm, humidify and slow down the air as we breathe.

The paranasal lining also produces nitric oxide (NO) to help improve blood vessel dilations to increase oxygen exchange in the lungs. It is a strong antimicrobial agent as well.

If we use the mouth to breath, we will miss out on all the goodness of the nasal nourishment.

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a condition that many dentists and physicians look out for. However, this does not just happen overnight. For many it is a developmental problem caused by poor facial and airway growth as a child. Encouraging proper growth early on helps prevent compensatory complications down the line.

This article discusses Inspiratory Flow Limitation (IFL) and a condition we call Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS). It is critical that we help develop optimal airways as a child.

“OSA is an illness. IFL is suboptimal wellness. Flow limitation is a precursor to OSA. If all we do is pay attention to apnea we are just managing a medical symptom. But if we want to live the best lives we can, we work toward optimal health and wellness. When we see children who are not well, and we want to help them to be the best they can be, we must use best practices to help them achieve optimal structure, function, and behavior to do so.”

If you are an adult or have a child that experiences excessive daytime fatigue, snoring or restless sleep then please call us on 9904 2880.

Inspiratory flow limitation is different from obstructive sleep apnea and therefore requires different approaches to treatment.
