Why does spinach make your teeth feel strange?

Have you ever eaten spinach and noticed that weird, chalky feeling on your teeth afterwards?

There’s a reason for it.

Spinach naturally contains oxalic acid. When you chew it, compounds can interact with calcium in your saliva and create tiny crystals that leave your teeth feeling temporarily rough or gritty.

It’s harmless - but once you notice the “spinach teeth” feeling, it’s very hard to un-notice it. 😄

Make dental visits a family affair!

Between school, work, sport and everything else life throws at you, finding time for dental appointments isn’t always easy.

Booking the family in together can be a simple way to stay on top of everyone’s oral health without making multiple trips to the dentist.

From little smiles to grown-up ones, regular dental visits help keep teeth and gums healthy and give your dental team the chance to spot any changes early.

So, if it’s been a while since the whole family had a check-up, why not get everyone booked in and tick it off the list together? 😊

Contact your local dental team to book your family’s next visit.

How Your Mouth Changes as You Age (20s, 30s, 40s, 50+)

Your smile changes throughout your life, just like the rest of your body.

From your twenties through to your fifties and beyond, your teeth, gums and mouth naturally experience changes influenced by age, lifestyle, diet and general health. While many of these changes are perfectly normal, understanding what to expect can help you maintain a healthy smile for years to come.

Here’s how your oral health may change during each stage of adulthood.

Why do we have wisdom teeth if we don’t need them?

Wisdom teeth are essentially a leftover from a very different diet. Our ancestors had larger jaws and ate much tougher, less processed foods. An extra set of molars was useful for all that chewing.

Modern humans generally have smaller jaws — but many of us are still growing the same number of teeth. That’s one reason wisdom teeth can sometimes run out of room and become impacted or difficult to clean.

Evolution takes its time!

Why does food suddenly taste weird after brushing your teeth?

Ever wondered why orange juice tastes absolutely terrible after brushing your teeth? 🍊🪥

It’s not the orange juice — it’s your toothpaste.

An ingredient commonly used in toothpaste can temporarily affect the way your tastebuds detect sweet and bitter flavours. The result? Foods and drinks you normally enjoy can taste surprisingly different straight after brushing.

Give your tastebuds a little time to reset before breakfast and everything should taste normal again.

Which Side Do You Sleep On?

😴 Strange question... Which side do you sleep on?

If you grind or clench your teeth at night, you may notice soreness in your jaw when you wake up.

Many people assume it's just "sleeping funny."

Sometimes your jaw is actually trying to tell you something.

If you regularly wake with jaw tension, headaches or tired facial muscles, we'd be happy to assess what's going on.

A better night's sleep might start with your smile.

The Ice Cube Habit, Quick poll...

Do you chew ice? 🧊

Lots of people do, Your teeth, however...

Not such big fans.

Ice is incredibly hard and can contribute to chipped teeth, cracked fillings and unnecessary wear.

If you love chewing ice, maybe let the cubes melt next time.

Your teeth will appreciate it.

🦷 It's Dental Health Week!

This year's theme, "Back to the Dentist," is all about helping young Australians get back into the habit of looking after their oral health before small problems become bigger ones. Dental Health Week 2026 focuses particularly on supporting 18–25 year olds to maintain healthy habits and keep regular dental check-ups on their to-do list.

But the message is one we can all take on board.

Whether it's been six months or six years since your last visit, there's never a bad time to get back on track.

A healthy smile starts with simple habits:
🪥 Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
🦷 Clean between your teeth every day.
💧 Choose water over sugary drinks.
😁 Visit your dentist regularly.

If you've been meaning to book an appointment, let Dental Health Week be the reminder you've been waiting for.

We'd love to welcome you back. 💙

Are You a Cruncher?

🥕 Apples.
Carrots.
Crusty bread.

Do any of those make you nervous?

Many people quietly start avoiding harder foods because one tooth feels "a bit funny."

The problem?

That little warning sign often doesn't disappear by itself.

If you've started changing the foods you eat because of one tooth, we'd recommend having it checked sooner rather than later.

What Your Tongue Says About Your Teeth

Try this, Without looking in a mirror...

Run your tongue over your teeth.

Do they feel smooth?

Or can you feel rough patches?

Your tongue often notices changes long before your eyes do.

A chipped tooth.
A rough filling.
Tartar build-up.

Your mouth gives you clues every day 🦷
