Cold air can trigger sensitivity in much the same way as an icy drink.

When the more sensitive inner layers of a tooth become exposed, changes in temperature can stimulate the nerves inside the tooth.

Occasional sensitivity can have a number of causes, but if one particular tooth suddenly starts reacting to cold, it’s worth getting it checked.

Does your mouth really get drier as you get older?

A dry mouth isn’t necessarily just part of getting older.

Saliva production itself doesn’t automatically drop dramatically simply because we age. However, certain medications and health factors become more common as we get older — and many of these can contribute to dry mouth.

Saliva plays an important role in protecting teeth, washing away food particles and neutralising acids.

If your mouth regularly feels unusually dry, it’s worth mentioning at your next visit.

Why do teeth feel furry sometimes?

That “furry” feeling on your teeth isn’t your imagination.

Throughout the day, bacteria naturally accumulate on the surface of your teeth and form a soft, sticky film called plaque.

Your tongue is incredibly sensitive to changes in texture, which is why you can often feel that build-up before you can actually see anything.

That beautifully smooth feeling after brushing? That’s the difference.

What does your tongue actually do all day?

Your tongue is doing a lot more work than you probably give it credit for.

It helps you speak, taste, chew and swallow. It moves food around your mouth, helps clear small particles from your teeth and works with saliva throughout the day.

It can also collect bacteria, food debris and dead cells on its surface.

So while teeth usually get all the attention, your tongue is a pretty important member of the oral health team too.

Can teeth actually heal themselves?

Your teeth have a limited ability to repair very early damage — but there’s a catch.

Enamel can’t grow back once it has been physically lost. However, in the earliest stages of tooth decay, minerals in your saliva and fluoride can help strengthen weakened enamel through a process called remineralisation.

Once decay progresses and a cavity forms, though, the tooth can’t simply rebuild the missing enamel.

Another good reason why finding problems early can make such a difference.

Why do we have wisdom teeth if we don’t need them?

Wisdom teeth are essentially a leftover from a very different diet. Our ancestors had larger jaws and ate much tougher, less processed foods. An extra set of molars was useful for all that chewing.

Modern humans generally have smaller jaws — but many of us are still growing the same number of teeth. That’s one reason wisdom teeth can sometimes run out of room and become impacted or difficult to clean.
