Most people think brushing and toothpaste are the only things protecting their teeth. But one of the most important defenses is something the body produces naturally—saliva.

Every day, saliva continuously washes away food particles, neutralizes harmful acids produced by oral bacteria, and supplies calcium and phosphate that help repair microscopic enamel damage before it develops into a cavity. It also helps control harmful bacteria, lubricates the mouth, and protects the gums and other oral tissues.

When saliva production decreases—even slightly—this natural protection begins to weaken. Acids stay on teeth longer, enamel loses minerals more easily, and bacteria thrive. This creates the perfect environment for cavities to develop, especially in the deep grooves of the back teeth where food and plaque collect.

Saliva works around the clock to protect teeth—but it can't do the job alone. Good oral hygiene, adequate hydration, a balanced diet, and regular dental checkups work together with saliva to help prevent tooth decay and keep the mouth healthy.

🦷 This is why a missing tooth should never be ignored.

Losing a tooth may not seem like a major problem at first, especially if it's hidden or doesn't cause pain. But the mouth is a balanced system, and even one missing tooth can trigger a chain reaction. Over time, neighboring teeth begin to drift into the empty space, while the opposing tooth may continue to erupt because it no longer has a tooth to bite against. This can gradually change the bite and affect how the teeth fit together.

As this process continues, chewing becomes less efficient, food is more likely to become trapped, and the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, excessive tooth wear, and bite problems increases. At the same time, the jawbone beneath the missing tooth begins to shrink because it no longer receives stimulation from the tooth root. The longer a tooth remains unreplaced, the more bone can be lost, making future treatment more difficult.

Replacing a missing tooth with the appropriate treatment—such as a dental implant, bridge, or partial denture—can help restore normal function, maintain jawbone health, prevent unwanted tooth movement, and preserve a healthy bite.

A bedtime bottle may seem comforting, but it can quietly damage a child's teeth while they sleep.

A recent Australian cohort study found that children who were bottle-fed to sleep beyond 12 months had a higher risk of developing early childhood tooth decay. Researchers also observed a higher likelihood of overweight among children who continued this bedtime feeding habit.

During sleep, saliva production naturally decreases, reducing the mouth's ability to wash away sugars and neutralize acids. When a bottle remains in the mouth as a child falls asleep, bacteria can feed on these sugars for prolonged periods, leading to repeated acid attacks on developing teeth.

This doesn't mean parents should stop meeting their child's nutritional needs. Instead, experts encourage gradually transitioning away from bedtime bottles after infancy, offering water instead of milk or sweetened drinks at bedtime when appropriate, and cleaning the child's teeth before sleep as soon as the first tooth erupts. Small changes in bedtime routines can help protect both oral and overall health during early childhood.

🚨 **Don't wait until your child's tooth hurts.** 🚨

The best time for a dental check-up is **during the school year**—before small problems become big ones.

Many children don't complain until a cavity or dental issue has already progressed. A simple check-up can detect problems early and help prevent:

❌ Painful toothaches
❌ Emergency dental visits
❌ Costly specialist referrals
❌ Long-distance travel for specialist appointments
❌ Missed school and missed work for parents

If your child is eligible for the **Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)**, Medicare may cover up to **$1,132** worth of eligible basic dental services over two consecutive calendar years.

✅ Dental examinations
✅ X-rays (when needed)
✅ Professional cleaning
✅ Fluoride treatment
✅ Fillings and more

Early treatment is usually simpler, less stressful, and can help avoid more complex procedures later.

📅 School term is the ideal time to book.

📞 Call us today to check your child's eligibility and secure an appointment before the school holidays fill up.

A small cavity may look harmless on the surface, but decay can continue spreading through the softer inner layers of the tooth.

If left untreated, it can eventually reach the pulp—the living center of the tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels. At that stage, treatment often becomes more complex than a simple filling.

This is why dentists recommend treating cavities early, even when they are small and painless. Early intervention helps preserve more of the natural tooth and can prevent deeper damage over time.

A new study found that children who continued thumb sucking or pacifier use for longer periods were significantly more likely to develop anterior open bite.

A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis published in BMC Oral Health analyzed data from 33 studies and found a clear association between prolonged non-nutritive sucking habits and anterior open bite—a condition in which the upper and lower front teeth do not properly meet when the mouth is closed.

Researchers also found that the longer these habits persisted, the greater the risk became. Daily pacifier use showed one of the strongest associations with open bite development.

Thumb sucking and pacifier use are common during early childhood and are often normal developmental behaviors. However, when these habits continue for extended periods, they may gradually influence the way the teeth and jaws develop.

The difference between healthy gums and gum disease often lies beneath the surface.

As gum disease progresses, bacteria and inflammation can gradually damage the gums, periodontal ligament, and supporting jawbone. Over time, gums may recede, periodontal pockets can deepen, bone levels may decline, and teeth can become less stable. Because this process usually develops slowly, many people are unaware that significant damage is occurring.

One of the biggest concerns is that this damage often develops silently, with few noticeable symptoms in its early stages. Early diagnosis, effective plaque control, and regular dental care can help protect the structures that keep teeth healthy and stable for life.
