A clean retainer = a happy mouth. Here’s what you need to know.

It might seem small, but how you care for your retainer has a real impact on your oral health. A retainer that isn’t cleaned properly can harbour bacteria, develop odours, and even cause irritation to your gums.

The good news? Keeping it fresh is simple. Rinse it every time you take it out. Clean it gently with a soft toothbrush and mild soap — not toothpaste, which can be too abrasive. Keep it away from heat, and soak it regularly with a retainer cleaning tablet for a deeper clean.
Small habits. Big results. Your smile will thank you.

Did you know age 7 is the magic number for your child’s first orthodontic check? ✨

It’s not about braces just yet, or treatment in most cases! It’s about catching little clues early, while the jaw is growing so we can time treatment correctly, take preventative steps and guide things gently in the right direction.

A slightly crowded smile, a jaw that’s growing a bit unevenly, or a bite that’s not quite lining up — these are things we can spot years before they’d ever cause your child discomfort or knock their confidence.

At Harris Orthodontics, we love this stage. It’s less about treatment and more about watching, understanding, and reassuring you as a parent that your child’s smile is on the right track — or gently guiding it there if it’s not. Think of it as a smile health check, not a to-do list or a treatment start for most cases.

Because every big, gappy, gummy, gorgeous seven-year-old smile deserves the best possible start. 💙

The recommendation from the Australia Society of Orthodontics is a checkup at 7! Check the website Aso.org.au

Happy Dental Health Week!
To celebrate this week we brought some good tips for you:

Braces do a lot of the hard work for that future smile — but keeping things clean along the way is what makes the whole journey smoother (and more comfortable!).

We know it can feel like a lot to juggle at first — new brackets, new wires, new routine. A few small habits, done consistently, make all the difference between a straightforward orthodontic journey and one full of avoidable hiccups.

Here’s what we recommend to our patients:

✔ Clean between your teeth
Floss or an interdental brush gets into those tight spaces your toothbrush can’t reach.

✔ Rinse before you brush
A quick swish of water first helps loosen any trapped food.

✔ Keep a brush with you
Brushing after meals throughout the day helps stop buildup before it starts.

✔ On the go? No worries
Rinsing with water after eating still helps dislodge food and lowers the risk of decay.

None of these habits take long, but together they protect your smile and make your treatment that much more comfortable.

Save this post so it’s handy for your daily braces routine 🦷✨

Crowding. Overbite. Underbite. Crossbite. If you’ve ever sat in a dental appointment and nodded along to words you didn’t fully understand, you’re not alone — and honestly, you’re in good company.

Most parents come to us having heard something is off with their child’s bite, but with no clear picture of what that actually means or whether it’s worth worrying about. The truth is, malocclusions — the technical term for when the teeth don’t fit together as they should — are incredibly common. What matters most isn’t the diagnosis itself, but knowing about it early enough to do something about it.

We created this carousel because we believe informed parents make empowered decisions. When you understand what crowding looks like, or why an underbite can affect more than just appearance, you’re better placed to advocate for your child’s long-term health.

At Harris Orthodontics, we don’t do jargon without explanation. Every family who walks through our doors gets clear answers, genuine care, and a treatment approach built around their child — not a one-size-fits-all plan.

If something has been flagged by your dentist, or you’ve simply got a gut feeling that something isn’t quite right, trust that instinct. An early conversation costs nothing, and the peace of mind is priceless.

We’ve all been there — mid-meal, and suddenly something is very stuck in your braces. Don’t panic.

First things first: resist the urge to use anything sharp or hard to dig it out. A soft interdental brush or orthodontic floss threader is your best friend in this situation. Water flossers are brilliant too — gentle, effective, and safe for your brackets and wires.

If something feels genuinely stuck or uncomfortable after a good clean, give us a call. Never try to force anything loose with your fingers or cutlery — that’s how brackets get damaged.
Braces-friendly eating gets easier with time, we promise. And we’re always here when you need us.
