Dental emergencies don't wait for a convenient time, so it's worth knowing what to do before one happens.

Pain that lingers is nearly always a sign something needs attention. Chipped or broken tooth: keep any pieces if you can, and book urgently. Knocked-out tooth: handle by the crown only, rinse gently without scrubbing, try to reinsert it or keep it in milk and get to us within 30 minutes. ⚡

Your teeth in your 50s are working with decades of use behind them, and they change in ways people often don't expect.

Enamel thins and becomes more sensitive. Gum recession becomes more noticeable. Old fillings and crowns start reaching the end of their lifespan. Dry mouth becomes more common as medications accumulate. Decay risk around existing restorations increases.

None of this is inevitable, but it does require paying attention — which is why staying consistent with check-ups matters more in this decade, not less. Dr Dan and Dr Donna both have a lot of experience with patients navigating exactly this stage.

In Australia, thousands of people are diagnosed with oral cancer each year. Like most cancers, early detection dramatically improves outcomes. Risk factors include smoking, regular alcohol consumption, sun exposure on the lips, and certain strains of HPV.
