Do wisdom teeth always need to come out? Not always.

Plenty of wisdom teeth sit in a workable position and don't cause problems over a lifetime — removal isn't automatic just because they're present. The wisdom teeth that tend to cause issues are usually impacted, meaning there isn't enough room for them to come through properly, or they're coming through at an angle that pushes against neighbouring teeth.

Signs worth getting checked include recurring pain at the back of the jaw, swelling, stiffness, or difficulty opening the mouth fully. The most reliable way to assess a wisdom tooth is an x-ray, which shows the angle it's sitting at and how much space is available. This is the only way to know for certain whether a wisdom tooth needs to come out or can be left as it is.

Porcelain veneers involve the irreversible removal of a small amount of tooth enamel, which is why caring for them well afterward matters as much as the placement itself. Veneers don't protect against gum disease or decay, so daily brushing with a soft-bristled brush and non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste, along with flossing around the margins of each veneer, remains essential.

Whitening toothpastes with coarse abrasive particles can gradually dull porcelain and are generally best avoided unless a dentist advises otherwise. Certain habits carry a higher risk of damage, including biting into very hard foods like ice or unshelled nuts, chewing on pens, or using teeth to open packaging. Strongly pigmented foods and drinks such as coffee, tea, and red w**e may cause gradual staining at the margins over time, and rinsing with water afterward is a sensible precaution.

Bruxism, or teeth grinding and clenching, is a significant risk factor for veneer damage, and a custom-fabricated night guard is often recommended for patients who grind during sleep. Regular dental reviews allow a dentist to check the margins, assess gum health, and catch minor issues early. How long veneers last varies between patients and depends on factors including original placement, bite, hygiene, and lifestyle. At Dentique Dental Spa in Mount Lawley, we make sure every veneer patient leaves with a clear understanding of how to care for their veneers.

Dental veneers are thin, custom-made coverings that are bonded to the front surface of teeth. They may be considered for certain cosmetic concerns, including tooth discolouration, chipped or worn teeth, uneven tooth shape and some gaps between teeth.

Veneers are not suitable for everyone. Treatment planning may take into account the condition of the teeth, bite, tooth position, the amount of tooth structure available and the overall health of the mouth.

Depending on your individual circumstances, alternatives such as orthodontic treatment, composite bonding or tooth recontouring may also be considered.

If you are considering dental veneers, a consultation can help you understand the available options and whether veneers are appropriate for your dental needs.

Kyle came to Dentique Dental Spa with concerns about crowded and uneven teeth, as well as worn and chipped edges on his front teeth. He was particularly concerned about the appearance of his upper front teeth.

His treatment involved 9 months of Invisalign clear aligners to address crowding and his bite, followed by composite restorations and cosmetic recontouring to restore the worn and chipped areas of his front teeth.

Different dental concerns may require a combination of treatments. An assessment is needed to determine the most appropriate options for each individual.

Many people assume implants and bridges do the same job. They don't quite work the same way.

A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth directly and stands on its own within the jawbone. A dental bridge, on the other hand, anchors to the teeth on either side of the gap, which means those neighbouring teeth need to be prepared to support it.

Which option is more appropriate for a given situation depends on several factors: bone levels in the area of the missing tooth, the condition of the neighbouring teeth, and what a person is looking for long-term. Some situations may be better suited to an implant, others to a bridge, and this is generally confirmed through a clinical assessment rather than assumed in advance.

Invisalign for adults can be an option for people who want to address certain teeth alignment concerns without traditional metal braces.

Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable aligners designed to gradually move the teeth as part of an individual treatment plan. Treatment may involve digital scans, a series of custom aligners and regular dental reviews to monitor progress.

Aligners generally need to be worn for most of the day and removed for eating, drinking anything other than water and cleaning the teeth. Treatment time varies depending on the complexity of the case and how the teeth respond to treatment.

If you are considering Invisalign, a dental assessment can help determine whether clear aligners are appropriate for your individual needs.

Dentures aren't what they were twenty years ago.

For a long time, dentures had a reputation for looking artificial and feeling loose or uncomfortable to wear. Materials and fitting methods have moved on a lot since then. Depending on the case, options today can include digital scanning for a more precise fit, different base materials, and tooth shapes and shading designed to sit more naturally with the rest of a person's face.

Dentures work by replacing missing teeth so a person can eat and speak more comfortably, and how well a denture fits depends on things like bone structure, gum condition, and how many teeth are being replaced. This is part of why dentures are assessed and made individually, rather than fitted from a standard mould. A dentist can talk through what's involved for a particular situation, including materials, fit, and maintenance over time.

A smile makeover may involve more than one type of dental treatment, depending on your individual needs.

Concerns such as tooth discolouration, chipped or worn teeth, uneven tooth shape, alignment concerns, spacing, or missing teeth may be addressed through different treatment options. These can include Invisalign, composite bonding, dental veneers, crowns, bridges, dentures or dental implants, where clinically appropriate.

The right treatment depends on factors such as your tooth position, proportions, condition, bite and overall oral health. A dental assessment can help determine which options may be suitable for you.

Jenna was concerned about the position of her front teeth and the uneven edges of her smile. She also felt that her front teeth appeared more prominent than she wanted.

Her treatment involved approximately two months of Invisalign to reposition the front teeth, followed by composite bonding and cosmetic recontouring to help balance the shape and edges of the teeth.

Every smile and treatment plan is different. The appropriate approach depends on individual dental needs and assessment.
