Can chewing gum actually be good for your teeth? We get this question quite a bit in the clinic, but the answer isn’t a simple yes or no. It all comes down to which gum you’re chewing.

If you're reaching for gum, sugar-free is the way to go, especially if it's sweetened with Xylitol. Not only does it help freshen your breath, but chewing sugar-free gum stimulates saliva flow, which helps wash away leftover food and neutralise acids. Gum that includes Xylitol goes one step further and helps to reduce cavity-causing bacteria.

But steer clear of the sugary stuff from your childhood like Juicy Fruit or Hubba Bubba. That kind of gum can feed bacteria in your mouth and lead to acid attacks on your tooth enamel, which means a higher risk of cavities.

A quick note too - if you get jaw pain or struggle with your TMJ, it’s best to limit how much gum you chew. Constant chewing can make this worse.

So it's a thumbs up from us, but just make sure it’s sugar-free, and ideally xylitol-based. And don’t forget: it’s no substitute for brushing, flossing, and regular dental check-ups.

We use dental X-rays to check for:
