When a teenager says, “I already feel insecure about my smile. Braces might make it worse,” the temptation is to immediately reassure them:
“No one will notice.”
But that may not be what they need to hear.
They may need to know that you understand why becoming more visible—even temporarily - feels frightening.
A gentler response might be:
“I understand why you are worried. You do not have to pretend that wearing braces would feel easy. But I would like us to find out what your options are and what the journey might actually look like for you.”
Then help them look beyond the first few weeks.
Invite them to picture laughing without covering their mouth, feeling comfortable in photos and speaking without wondering whether someone is looking at their teeth.
Not as a promise. As a possibility worth exploring, with the first step being the initial consultation.
Remember, the initial consultation is not a commitment to braces.
It is simply an opportunity for your teenager to ask questions, understand their options, see what may be possible and begin imagining their smile with greater confidence.
If you have noticed changes in the way your teenager smiles, talks, appears in photos or feels about their teeth, a first consultation can give both of you clarity and reassurance.
