What Is Happy Gas?
Happy gas is a mixture of 2 gases, nitrous oxide & oxygen, that is delivered through a nasal mask fitted over your nose.
How Does It Work?
• The Nitrous oxide makes you feel sleepy & relaxed but you’re still awake & aware of what is happening around you. You will feel dreamy, floaty & warm. In some cases you may not be able to remember the procedure afterwards.
• The gas works quickly & wears off quickly.
• Local anaesthesia injections may also be given while you are sedated.
• Nitrous oxide gas works for most people but not for everyone. If the nitrous oxide didn’t work for you, there are other alternatives available to help you.
Is It Safe?
Nitrous oxide gas is considered relatively safe because it is not metabolised in the body and does not interact with organ systems.
Common Side Effects
• If you have sinusitis, pain may be experienced during the course of nitrous oxide.
• Feeling nauseous, vomiting.
• Fatigue
Who should not take happy gas & when it should be avoided.
• Respiratory disorders: acute respiratory depression, current exacerbation of asthma pneumothorax, lung cyst, obstructive airways disease.
• Middle ear infection
• Recent ear/eye surgery (within past 3 Months)
• Currently pregnant.
• Myasthenia gravis
• Unable to breathe through nose.
• Unable to tolerate nasal mask.
How to prepare before procedure.
We recommend eating a light meal & drink 2 hours before & then eat as normal after the procedure.
What to expect after the procedure.
• You will need to get someone to drive you to and from your appointment.
• You will recover from the effects of nitrous oxide very quickly once the dental treatment has been completed.
• You may be asked to stay fora brief period of observation following the sedation.
• Some people may feel a little sick or nauseated. If you feel sick or vomit, have some water to drink & rest.
• If you have had a local anaesthetic as well, you will need to be careful not to bite your lip or cheek. This will normally wear off in 3-4 hours.
