Today most of us understand that sugar alone is the major cause of tooth decay. However, sugar does cause you more serious issues other than rotten teeth.

When I conduct a diet diary with my patients, many will discuss how they are eating healthy, low fat diets. But many low fat recommendations have led to a dramatic increase in sugar consumption. If we consider heart disease, it is in fact sugar, not fat, that drives it.

Excess sugar is also the primary driver for many other common chronic inflammation & diseases that we may see everyday. To be put simply, sugar can actually stimulate the growth of bad bacteria in the gut, which then sets off a cascade of digestive issues.

Keep an eye out in the ingredients section of the foods you buy. Even foods considered 'healthy' can contain alarming quantities of added sugar or fructose, commonly in the form of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS).
