This week is National Reconciliation Week 2026 (27 May - 3 June) 🖤💛❤️

The theme this year is ‘All In’ - a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day.

At North Richmond Community Health, many of our clients and community members are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and their health and wellbeing is central to everything we do. Reconciliation is not just a week on the calendar for us - it is part of our everyday commitment to providing safe, culturally responsive care and advocating for health equity for First Nations people.

This week and every week, we stand with our First Nations community members, clients, and colleagues.

When did you last have a breast screen? 🩷

If it's been a while - or you've never had one - our free women-only breast health information sessions this June are a great place to start.

We know breast screening can feel daunting. That's why we've partnered with BreastScreen Victoria to bring information and support directly to our community, with free breast screens also coming to North Richmond later in June.

📅 English, Mandarin and Hakka: Friday 5 June, 1pm–3pm

📅 English and Vietnamese: Friday 12 June, 1pm–3pm

📍 North Richmond Community Hub, 110 Elizabeth Street, Richmond

🍱 Lunch provided

Breast screens can find cancer before you or your doctor can feel it - and the sooner it's found, the better the outcomes. If you're aged 50 to 74 with no breast symptoms, a free 10-minute screen every two years could save your life.

Coming soon - BreastScreen Victoria's mobile van visits North Richmond Community Health, 15–24 June. Watch this space!

For more information contact the Community Hub on 0497 958 653 or visit: www.nrch.com.au/breast-screening-info-sessions/

We're excited to introduce our new CP@clinic - a free Community Paramedic service now running at the North Richmond Community Hub!

CP@clinic is an evidence-based program delivered in collaboration with La Trobe University and McMaster University - and we're proud to be the first health service in metropolitan Melbourne to bring it to our community.

By supporting people early - before health conditions become more serious - our Community Paramedics work alongside GPs and other health professionals to make sure our community gets the care they need, when they need it.

We are thrilled to welcome Community Paramedics Keli and Nicholas to our team. They are here to help adults in our community with a range of services to support their health and wellbeing, including:

✅ Management of long-term health conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and more
✅ Health checks
✅ Mental health check-ins
✅ Support with personal health goals
✅ Referrals to other health professionals and services

Come and visit our CP@clinic:
📍 North Richmond Community Hub, 110 Elizabeth Street, Richmond
📅 Monday 12pm–3pm (drop-in)
📅 Tuesday 10am–1pm (appointment only)

The clinic is free, no Medicare card is needed, and interpreters are available in any language at no cost - because we believe everyone deserves easy access to health care.

Tomorrow is International Nurses Day - and we want to celebrate the incredible nurses at North Richmond Community Health!

Our nurses work across Medical Services, AOD Outreach, our Medically Supervised Injecting Room (MSIR) and the Inner Melbourne Post Acute Care (IMPAC) team. Every day they deliver trusted, person-centred care to some of our community's most marginalised members.

Here's what a few of them had to say:

💬 Imogen (Medical Services): "I knew I had found my place in healthcare when I started working in community health. I love getting to know people over years and making small differences to a person's life every day - I believe that's what makes the big impact."

💬 Harriet (AOD Outreach): "Working with disadvantaged communities means making sure the people who are often overlooked are heard. We will never stop fighting for equality in healthcare and breaking down stigma to ensure everyone feels empowered in their own healthcare."

💬 Molly (MSIR): "I enjoy establishing rapport and building trusting relationships with our clients. Many of our MSIR clients fall through the gaps in healthcare, so I see my role as bridging those gaps - both as a nurse and in my leadership role within the team."

Thank you Imogen, Harriet, Molly, and all of our nurses for the care and commitment you bring every single day. 💙

Today is International Harm Reduction Day. This day recognises the essential work being done to support people who use drugs - meeting them where they are, without judgement, and delivering practical, evidence-based programs that reduce harm, save lives, and treat every person with dignity and respect.

We asked Cari, Team Leader of our Outreach and Engagement team, to share why he works in harm reduction - and he said it better than we ever could:

"Harm reduction is the ethos that 'no one is disposable' in action. I work in harm reduction because I believe that all people, regardless of what we've been through, have a fundamental right to life, dignity, autonomy and self-determination.

Harm reduction meets people where they're at and trusts people as the experts on their own lives. When practiced through a liberatory framework, it empowers people to be in the driver's seat of their lives and wellbeing.

It is the acknowledgement that we are all in this together, that no one should be left behind, that we all deserve care, and that we all have a responsibility to look out for each other."

On this day, we honour everyone working toward a world where no one is left behind. 💚

Over March and April, our Healthy Communities team partnered with the Multicultural Centre for Women's Health (MCWH) to run a series of Health Information Sessions at the North Richmond Community Hub.

Covering health topics that are critically important to the women in our community - mental health, navigating the mental health system and breast cancer screening - these sessions were designed to meet women where they are, in a space that feels safe, welcoming, and culturally responsive. We wrapped up our final session this week with a focus on cervical cancer screening.

Many women in our community were born overseas and face considerable barriers to accessing health information - from language and literacy challenges to navigating an unfamiliar health system. These sessions are a significant opportunity to break down these barriers.

A huge thank you to MCWH for running these educational sessions and for your commitment to migrant and refugee women. And thank you to every woman from our community who came along - your health matters, and it’s vital that you are well informed about your healthcare.

Good girl, Alaska!

Meet Alaska, our resident guide dog at North Richmond Community Health. We need to be respectful of Alaska’s role with her owner Kathriye, the Volunteer Services Coordinator at NRCH, and not treat her like a pet that can be patted and distracted. She has an important job to do: keeping her handler safe!

Today is International Guide Dog Day and we want to recognise the important role guide dogs play in supporting people’s freedom and independence.

Last Friday, we held the first of four community information sessions on recycling education and our new Community Hub Recycling Program 🌱♻️

This program responds to community concerns about littering, illegal dumping, and limited access to recycling options - particularly as many residents prepare for the imminent relocation and redevelopment of the housing towers. Our goal is to make recycling easy, visible, and part of everyday life so residents can take pride in a clean, safe, and connected community.

The session was run by Suruchi, a student intern with our Healthy Communities team - who did a wonderful job educating the community about recycling.

As part of the program, you can now drop off a range of items for recycling at The Hub, 110 Elizabeth Street, including:
♻️Wine corks
♻️Plastic shopping bags
♻️E-waste
♻️Vapes and e-cigarettes
♻️Coffee capsules and grounds
♻️X-rays
♻️Drinking glasses
…and more!

This project is proudly supported by Yarra City Council through the North Richmond Precinct Grant Program (2026) and the Quick Response Grants Program.

We’re aiming to hold the next session in July. Check out our website to keep up-to-date on future information sessions and other activities run by our Healthy Communities team 👉 https://nrch.com.au/groups-and-events/
