Your own saliva has minerals and proteins that will stick to the surface of the tooth, while new and soft they are called plaque and by physically disturbing them you can stop their accumulation but once left for long they harden.

Saliva contains various minerals and proteins that adhere to the tooth’s surface. In their nascent and pliable state, they are referred to as plaque. Through mechanical intervention, such as brushing and flossing, one can disrupt the accumulation of plaque. However, if left undisturbed over an extended period, these deposits undergo a process of mineralization, transforming into a hardened substance. This transition from pliable plaque to hardened deposits necessitates more intensive dental intervention for removal.

When you eat, your saliva leaves tiny bits of minerals and proteins on your teeth. At first, they’re soft and called plaque. If you clean your teeth regularly, you can stop plaque from building up. But if you don’t, it can get hard over time. And then, it’s tougher to remove.
