What’s the difference between snoring and sleep apnoea?

Although snoring is a common symptom of sleep apnoea, just because you snore it doesn’t mean you have sleep apnoea.

Snoring is the noisy vibration in the throat as air squeezes through the partially blocked airway. Besides disturbing sleep partners it could be associated with ill health effects due to the loss of quality sleep and insufficient oxygen.

Sleep apnoea is a common and serious sleep-related breathing disorder which is characterised by an interruption of breathing for more than 10 seconds followed by a desperate attempt to get oxygen down into the lungs. The negative health effects of sleep apnoea are well studied (stroke, heart attacks, early dementia, etc) and it often affects a patient's daytime sleepiness, mood and concentration.

Both snoring and sleep apnoea should be addressed for a healthy lifestyle. Book in for a free consultation today.

Oral appliances are regarded by sleep physicians and the Australian Dental guidelines as a first-line treatment for snoring and mild to moderate sleep apnoea. They are like mouthguards that prevent the tongue falling backward which opens up the airway. They are very comfortable and simple to put in and remove. You will still be able to talk, drink water, and it is difficult to even tell you are wearing one. At KeepSleep we offer both nylon and acrylic devices.
