Diet - specifically the toughness of food - is one of the leading contributors to the jaw muscles' development.  A diet comprised of soft foods and liquids means less chewing is required, which means the jaw muscles are working less - ultimately causing them to become weaker.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When the jaw muscles are weak, the jaws are more likely to grow in a downward fashion instead of forwards. You can test this theory on yourself by clenching your jaws together (note that the bottom jaw swings forward in the process), and then relaxing your jaws (note that the bottom jaw hangs lower).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When jaws grow in a downward fashion like this, they tend to narrow - increasing the risk of crowded teeth.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So, to bring this full circle; a soft diet (like the one introduced during the industrial revolution where soft, processed foods became common) that requires little chewing is a major catalyst for the increase in crowded teeth and improper diets we see today.

As it is a relatively new and novel concept that challenges traditional dentistry's status quo, mewing has been met with its fair share of criticism. Many are sceptical as to how things like chewing exercises and tongue positioning can so dramatically change the shape of the face.

Oral infections - whether they affect the teeth, the gums or both - are not confined to the mouth. They affect the rest of the body. This is why getting well from dental treatment alone is often impossible. To prevent or recover from illness and disease post dental treatment, detoxification and healing are required. Have you ever noticed that athletes tend to be good looking? Not just in terms of their physique, but their facial structure too. If you look at athletes, you'll typically see the following characteristics define their faces; straight teeth, defined jawline, proper bite, high cheekbones, good proportions and good symmetry.

Similarly, what you don't often see in athletes is; overbite or underbite, long face, hooked or crooked nose, poor proportions and asymmetry.

While it may seem strange at face value, this phenomenon is much more than a coincidence. There is a perfectly logical explanation as to why athletes are attractive. There are two facets to this explanation, which are intertwined with one another. Read the full article online to learn more…

Treating anxious and nervous children presents a challenge for dentists. Thus, dentists often look to reduce the likelihood of the child needing further treatment down the line. This will often lead dentists to take preventative measures. The issue is that these preventative treatments can do more harm than good…

Paediatric and children’s dentists face tough decisions when dealing with tooth decay - especially with nervous and scared children. As a result, there are often several downstream consequences to their treatments…

We regularly treat people who drink fluoridated water and use fluoridated toothpaste yet still suffer from tooth decay. Why is this?

It is not the absence of fluoride that causes tooth decay, but rather the presence of sugar. We regularly treat people who drink fluoridated water and use fluoridated toothpaste yet still suffer from tooth decay.
