What is a tongue tie and how can it affect oral development?

A tongue tie is a band of tissue that restricts tongue movement, which can impact feeding, speech, dental development, and airway health. While not all tongue ties cause issues, some do and when they do, a procedure called a frenectomy may be recommended to improve mobility.

At Ivory Orthodontics, we treat older children, teens, and adults when tongue ties are affecting oral health and orthodontic development. We also see newborns as part of an early intervention approach especially when issues like breastfeeding difficulties, poor weight gain, or reflux-like symptoms are present. Early treatment can support proper swallowing patterns, which play an important role in the healthy development of the dental arches and nasal airway.

It's important to note that we are not your first port of call. A referral is required, and we encourage you to first speak with a lactation consultant, speech pathologist, osteopath, or chiropractor if you have concerns.

Think a tongue tie might be contributing to your or your child’s orthodontic concerns? We’re happy to chat through your options once you have a referral.
