A Specialist Orthodontist is a dentist who has completed additional accredited training in orthodontics and is recognised as a specialist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

Yesterday, many of our SSO crew took part in the Cancer Council Tasmania Women’s 5km Walk/Run – what a fantastic turn out!

A special shout-out to our superstar Treatment Coordinator, Nerine, whose run was an absolute standout! 🏃‍♀️⭐

We love getting behind local events that bring our community together and support such important causes.👏🩷

🦷✨ Our team recently attended the 2026 Align ANZ Orthodontist Forum in Hobart! ✨🦷

It was a fantastic opportunity to learn about developments in Invisalign treatment, digital orthodontics, iTero scanning and treatment planning, as well as new ways to improve efficiency and the overall patient experience.

We loved learning alongside other orthodontic professionals and bringing fresh ideas and knowledge back to our practice - helping us continue to evolve the care we provide our patients. 💙

🌼 Spring has sprung! 🌼

Warmer days, blooming gardens… and a little reminder that healthy smiles need some springtime love too! 😁

Fun fact: Did you know tooth enamel can’t grow back once it’s lost? Unlike many tissues in the body, enamel doesn’t contain living cells that can regenerate it.

That’s why good brushing and regular dental check-ups are so important - especially during orthodontic treatment. 🪥🦷

😁 Fresh Smile Friday 😁

This patient completed around two years of treatment with fixed braces and fixed bite correction, helping to improve both tooth alignment and the way the teeth bite together.

To finish treatment, we used a short sequence of clear aligners to close the remaining small spaces and refine the final result. 🦷🤩

It’s a great example of how a specialist orthodontist may use different orthodontic appliances at different stages of treatment, depending on the individual patient and their treatment needs.

“Sweet” news for teeth 🙌

A new Australian study published in BMJ Public Health, the first of its kind to quantify the impacts of a proposed sugar tax beyond tooth decay, suggests a 20 per cent rate may prevent millions of cases of tooth decay, with revenue generated contributing to the strengthening of oral health services.

ADA Vice President, Dr Angie Nilsson, says the new study, which builds on existing research and evidence out of countries like the UK, shows how beneficial a sugar tax could be, especially if energy drinks are also included.

The ADA, in line with the World Health Organization, has long backed calls for a sugar tax or levy on sugary drinks in order "to reduce consumption and provide funding for oral health promotion and oral care".
