Most people are using a toothbrush that's way past its prime.

Here's the rule your dentist follows:

Replace every 3 months. No exceptions.

When bristles start to fray and splay outward, they can no longer reach between your teeth or along the gum line. Cleaning effectiveness drops by up to 30% — and a worn brush can actually scratch your enamel and irritate your gums.

The 3 signs it's time to replace:
— Bristles are frayed or splayed
— It's been more than 3 months
— You've been sick recently

And for kids? Check every 6–8 weeks. They brush harder and wear bristles faster.

Swipe through for the full replacement guide — including what happens week by week as your brush ages.

Most people think they brush for 2 minutes. The reality? The average person brushes for just 45 seconds.

When you cut your brushing time in half, you're leaving behind the very plaque that causes cavities and gum disease.

Under-brushing leaves plaque intact, feeding bacteria all day. This leads to chronic inflammation — the early stage of gingivitis — which most people mistake for "sensitive gums."

Here is the 2-minute protocol we recommend at Kings Family Dental:

[1] 30 Seconds Per Quadrant: Divide your mouth into 4 sections. Spend exactly 30 seconds on each.
[2] Circular, Not Scrubbing: Use small circular motions at a 45-degree angle to the gumline.
[3] All 3 Surfaces Every Time: Outer face, inner face, and chewing surface of every tooth.
[4] Spit, Don't Rinse: Spit out excess toothpaste but don't rinse with water. Leave the fluoride working.

Set a timer tonight and see how long 2 minutes actually feels!

Due for a check-up? Let us check for any plaque buildup from years of rushed brushing. A professional clean removes what brushing can't.

Most people on aligners are unknowingly damaging their teeth.

Not from the aligners themselves — but from the habits around them.

Eating with trays in. Drinking coffee through them. Putting them back in over unbrushed teeth. These small mistakes seal bacteria and acid directly against your enamel for 20+ hours a day.

Here's what your dentist actually wants you to know. Swipe through.

✅ Remove before eating — every time
✅ Brush AND floss before reinserting
✅ Rinse trays with cool water (never hot)
✅ Soak overnight with cleaning crystals
✅ Hit your 22-hour wear target daily

The patients who follow this routine finish treatment on time AND with healthier teeth than when they started.

Are you on aligners? Drop a 🦷 below and we'll DM you our free Aligner Hygiene Checklist.

🍊 That "healthy" smoothie you had this morning? It might have more sugar than a Coke.

Most people know to avoid lollies and soft drinks. But the foods quietly wrecking teeth are the ones labelled "natural", "low-fat", or "no added sugar".

Here's what's actually hiding in your daily diet:

🧃 A 250ml glass of OJ = up to 21g of sugar (same as Coke)
🥣 Flavoured yogurt = 12–20g of sugar per serve
🍞 2 slices of white bread = 3–4g of sugar
🍅 1 tbsp tomato sauce = 4g of sugar
⚡ Sports drinks = 15–30g per bottle

The problem isn't just the amount — it's the frequency. Every time sugar hits your teeth, bacteria convert it to acid within 20 seconds. That acid attack lasts 20–40 minutes.

Sipping juice all morning = hours of acid exposure.

✅ What to do instead:
1️⃣ Read labels — look for "total sugars per 100g"
2️⃣ Drink juice with meals, not throughout the day
3️⃣ Rinse with water after sugary foods
4️⃣ Wait 30 mins before brushing after acidic food
5️⃣ Use fluoride toothpaste to remineralise enamel

Your mouth is at its dirtiest at 7AM — and brushing your teeth alone won’t fix it. ■
While you sleep, your saliva flow drops by up to 85%. That’s when anaerobic bacteria take
over your tongue coating and produce the compounds responsible for morning breath.
The fix isn’t more toothpaste. It’s a tongue scraper.
Swipe through to see exactly what’s happening in your mouth overnight — and the 3-step
morning reset that actually works. ■
■ Do you use a tongue scraper? Let us know below!

String floss or water flosser… which wins? 🦷💦

The truth is — both can be great when used properly.

🪥 String floss is excellent for physically scraping plaque between teeth and under the gums.
💧 Water flossers can help flush out food debris and may be easier for people with braces, implants, or sensitive gums.

Our recommendation?
The best floss is the one you’ll actually use consistently 🙌

If possible, combining both can give you the best of both worlds for a cleaner, healthier smile ✨

You brush your teeth and it's still there 10 minutes later — here's why.

The real cause of bad breath isn't your teeth. It's the bacteria living on your tongue. These bacteria produce sulphur compounds that no amount of toothbrushing will remove. The fix? A tongue scraper, alcohol-free mouthwash, and staying hydrated. Swipe through for the full 4-step protocol.

You brush twice a day — so why does the bad breath keep coming back? 🦷

The truth is, mints and gum only mask the problem. The real cause is bacteria living in your mouth, on your tongue, and between your teeth. Swipe through to find out exactly what’s causing it and how to fix it for good.
