Meet the Team ~ Krystal

Krystal has been a valued member of the Avalon Dental team for the past 7 years, working as our Treatment Co-ordinator. Originally from Karratha, she has called Perth home for the past decade.

Outside of work, Krystal enjoys spending quality time with her partner Rory, daughter Wren, and their dog Jagger. She also loves camping, trail walking, and making the most of time with family and friends.

What Krystal enjoys most about working at Avalon Dental is helping patients feel confident in their smiles and creating a welcoming, comfortable environment in a space that can sometimes feel intimidating.

Root canal treatment (RCT) sounds scary but it’s actually a simple way to save your tooth and stop pain.

Inside every tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp. When it becomes infected (from deep decay, cracks, or trauma), it can cause ongoing pain, sensitivity, or swelling.
An RCT works by:
• Removing the infected pulp
• Cleaning and disinfecting the inside of the tooth
• Sealing it to prevent further infection
The result is pain relief and keeping your natural tooth in place meaning no extraction needed.

Modern root canals are comfortable and similar to getting a regular filling.
If you’ve been dealing with tooth pain, don’t ignore it. Early treatment is always easier (and less costly).

Meet the Team ~ Katie

Katie joined the Avalon team in 2013 and has become an integral part of the practice, now leading the team as our Practice Manager. She and her husband, Vince, are proud parents to two young boys, George and Charles, and have recently welcomed a new puppy, Lily, to the family.

When she’s not at work, Katie loves spending time outdoors with her family, especially bushwalking and camping. She also enjoys relaxing with creative hobbies such as cross-stitch and crochet.

What Katie loves most about working at Avalon Dental is building connections with patients and seeing the confidence and happiness that comes from making a genuine difference in someone’s life.

What is composite bonding?
Composite bonding is a cosmetic dental treatment that aims to mask minor dental flaws using a white-coloured composite resin material that gets bonded and shaped directly onto a small section of a tooth.

The resin is carefully sculpted and bonded to the natural tooth before being hardened with a specialised light and refined, depending on your individual clinical situation.

It’s a similar treatment to getting a filling placed for sealing small gaps in teeth, but addresses both the functionality and aesthetics of a smile.

Did you know we are all born with our two sets of teeth – called deciduous (milk or baby teeth) and permanent teeth. By age three we have 20 deciduous teeth; these are lost between the ages of six to 14, and ultimately replaced by 32 permanent teeth. The final teeth to come in are the wisdom teeth any time after the age of 16.

At Avalon Dental we work with the most advanced equipment to keep your oral health pristine. Trios 3Shape scanners are one new machine we have in our office, allowing us to capture thousands of images of the inside of your mouth. These images are then put together to form an accurate model of your gums, teeth, and mouth in 3D. With these 3D models, your clinician can assess the entirety of your mouth and accurately plan every stage of treatment for any dental issues you may have.

As your dental professional moves the wand, a 3D model of your teeth, as well as the inside of your mouth, will begin to appear on the screen of the Trios 3Shape scanner. The model is used to examine your teeth and determine the best treatment options for you.

🦷 Anatomy 101: What’s Inside Your Tooth?

Ever wonder what makes up your pearly whites? It’s not just one solid piece! Here is the breakdown:
Enamel: The hard, outer shell. Your tooth's armor against decay! 🛡️
Dentin: The yellow-ish layer beneath the enamel, supporting the structure. 💛
Pulp: The living center. Contains nerves and blood vessels (the "nerve" of the tooth). 🧠
Cementum: A hard tissue covering the root, keeping it anchored to the jawbone. ⚓
Periodontal Ligament: The connective tissue holding the tooth tightly in place.
👉 Keep your enamel strong by brushing twice a day!

Dental Sealants vs Fillings
Knowing the difference between these two treatments helps set expectations. One protects before damage happens, the other repairs after the damage is done.

Here’s a simple comparison:

Purpose
Sealants: Guard healthy teeth from decay
Fillings: Fix cavities and restore function

When They’re Used
Sealants: Before any visible decay is present
Fillings: After decay has formed

Process
Sealants: Non-invasive, applied in minutes, no discomfort
Fillings: Requires removing decayed enamel, may involve numbing

Material Type
Sealants: Thin resin coatings
Fillings: Composite resin, amalgam, or other restorative materials

Longevity
Sealants: Can last 5 to 10 years
Fillings: Can last many years, depending on location and material

Both play a part in preserving your smile, but they do so at very different stages.
