Have you noticed your enamel starting to wear away? You might be clenching or grinding your teeth without realising it.

While we only actively use our teeth for eating about 1% of the time, many of us develop habits of clenching or grinding during other times as well, beyond normal eating movements. Over time, if these habits continue with too much force, the enamel at the front and back of your teeth can start to wear away.

While clenching or grinding might be a natural tendency or a developed habit, a protective dental splint provides an effective solution to prevent enamel wear.

Custom-made for comfort, our splints are usually worn on the upper teeth at night, designed to integrate seamlessly into your nightly routine. Their thin profile and smooth outer surface ensure no harm to opposing teeth, while a cushioned inner layer enhances comfort.

Many patients find their splint becomes like a pacifier over time—something they feel they need in their mouth to fall asleep and get a good night's rest.

Creating your splint is a straightforward process with our digital scanning technology. We precisely capture the three-dimensional positions of your teeth, ensuring your splint is made to exact specifications by our preferred dental lab for a perfect fit.

If you're experiencing tooth wear or think you might be grinding at night, ask about a protective splint at your next appointment.

When food gets trapped between your teeth and it's hard to clean out after every meal, it's more than just an annoyance – it could be a sign of a developing dental issue.

If you're suddenly experiencing food packing between certain teeth, it's often because a filling has broken down or one of your teeth has drifted slightly. This needs daily attention to prevent complications.

For daily maintenance, it's important to know that floss alone might not be enough. Floss can just "swim" in those slightly larger spaces without lifting the food pack effectively. You'll need piksters to push from the outside in to remove larger food particles first, followed by flossing. This cleaning should be done after every meal.

More importantly, we can address the underlying cause. We can apply a very conservative but strong bonding using white tooth-coloured composite resin to create better contact between teeth. This solution still allows for proper flossing while preventing food from becoming trapped.

Left untreated, trapped food doesn't just cause bad breath. It can lead to gum irritation and root surface decay – which can travel very fast to the nerve and potentially require more extensive treatment like a root canal.

If you're noticing food getting jammed between your teeth, come in and see us. We'll examine the area, help determine the cause, and provide options to prevent food packing. We can also show you the best techniques for daily cleaning to protect your dental health.

Curious why biocrowns are a game-changer in dental restoration? When we perform a biocrown procedure, we start by removing any weak tooth structure, old amalgams and decay, while importantly leaving behind the good enamel. This conservative approach preserves as much of your natural tooth as possible.

Next, we create what's called a biomimetic immediate dentine seal - this provides a really strong link between your tooth and the biocrown that we'll bond at your next visit.

We then use our Trios digital scanner to capture your tooth, the opposing teeth, and how they fit together. This gives us exact three-dimensional measurements to ensure perfect fit. These digital impressions are sent to our preferred lab where a strong porcelain crown is crafted - like a lid that fits perfectly over a bucket.

At your next appointment, we bond this crown using techniques that achieve a bond strength of around 80 megapascals. This strength is comparable to what's used in modern aircraft wings and bridges - providing that perfect balance of strength and flexibility. Most importantly, it mimics the natural bond between your enamel and dentine, effectively returning the original strength back to your tooth for a really great, long-lasting result.

Are you constantly fighting with food trapped between your teeth? This isn't just annoying—it could signal a developing dental problem. When teeth shift or fillings break down, these new gaps become food traps that regular flossing alone can't fix. Watch to learn our two-step approach: the proper daily cleaning technique using both piksters and floss, plus how we can apply conservative tooth-colored bonding to close those gaps while maintaining flossability. Don't ignore this issue—trapped food can quickly lead to gum irritation and rapid decay that might eventually require root canal treatment. Book with Grange Road Dental today to protect your smile!

Ever wondered what it's like to have a dentist as a patient? Today I had the pleasure of treating a retired dentist who experienced our Airflow technology for the very first time.

One challenge with dental implants is cleaning around the gum level - you've got to be really delicate there. The Airflow allowed us to get right down to that gum level where he'd normally be a bit sensitive, but today there were no problems whatsoever. His reaction? "I wish these toys were around 50 years ago when I was working!"

That's what I love about treating fellow dentists - they experience modern dentistry through our lens. This gentleman is quite interesting - he's into hobbies and even sets up a local hobby show. When we cleaned around his lower front teeth with the Airflow, the stain came right off, and he was amazed by the lemon-flavoured powder we used. I've been calling it "lemon meringue," and he loved it! He's already requesting chocolate brownie or cherry ripe flavour for next time - though definitely not blueberry, he was quite clear about that.

For many people, just walking through a dental practice door can be difficult. That's why we focus on gentle dentistry at our practice. If you're seeing me on video like this, it gives you a chance to get to know me a little better before you even come in. Modern technologies like the Airflow are just one way we're making dental visits more comfortable for everyone - even retired dentists!

Are you waking up with sensitive teeth or noticing worn enamel? You might be grinding your teeth without realizing it. While we only use our teeth for eating about 1% of the time, unconscious grinding can cause serious damage over time. A custom-fitted dental splint could be the simple solution you need to protect your smile and improve your sleep. Our digital scanning technology ensures a perfect fit that becomes so comfortable, many patients can't sleep without it. Ask us about protective splints at your next visit to Grange Road Dental and stop enamel wear before it leads to bigger problems.

Have you ever wondered if there's a better alternative to traditional dental crowns? Let me tell you about an amazing innovation that's changing the way we restore teeth.

About 15 years ago, I began offering biomimetic crowns – or "biocrowns" as I call them – after learning this technique from Dr. Pascal Meunier, one of the founders from the University of Geneva in Switzerland.

What makes biocrowns so revolutionary? While traditional crowns might look good, they actually require removing a good portion of your natural tooth structure – like putting your tooth in a pencil sharpener. Biocrowns, however, preserve your natural tooth structure, which is absolutely amazing.

This preservation is critical. It's Dental 101 – the more enamel we keep, the more strength there is. Your natural enamel bonds to the inner dentine layer, providing strength to the tooth. When we maintain this structural integrity, your tooth remains stronger and healthier.

Biocrowns also look incredible with a seamless join. We use really, really strong resins – the same bonding technology used to keep modern aircraft wings together. This creates a bond strength of up to 80 megapascals, mimicking the natural bond between enamel and dentine. Traditional crowns? They achieve only 8-10 megapascals at best, and that cement isn't actually bonding – it's just gap filler.

Because biocrowns are minimally invasive, you're much less likely to need root canals down the track. We're protecting the nerve and blood supply within your tooth, maintaining its vitality.

The results are truly long-lasting – I expect biocrowns to last 15-20 years or more. There's also less risk of what I'd call catastrophic issues after treatment. Traditional crowns can develop decay between the margin and the root surface at the gum level, potentially leading to nerve damage or tooth breakage. Biocrowns significantly reduce these risks.

The materials we use are also highly biocompatible – your body sees them as natural, with no negative effects on gum health or overall wellbeing.

When your tooth has lost its structural integrity through wear or fillings, a biocrown can recreate that strength – like putting a lid on a bucket – restoring the tooth to its former strength. It's quite amazing technology that more people should know about.
